Work to continue at Alaska mine site, despite vote
Source: Daily Finance/AP

JUNEAU, Alaska -The group promoting a massive gold-and-copper prospect near Alaska's Bristol Bay said Tuesday they plan to press on with their work, despite passage of a ballot initiative aimed at stopping the controversial Pebble Mine.

Unofficial results released by southwest Alaska's Lake and Peninsula Borough late Monday showed a vote of 280-246 in favor of a ban on large-scale resource extraction activity, including mining, that would destroy or degrade salmon habitat.

The measure was targeted at Pebble Mine, which opponents fear could fundamentally change the landscape and disrupt, if not destroy, a way of life in rural Alaska and threaten one of the world's premier salmon fisheries.

...The mine would be directly above Iliamna Lake, the largest producer of sockeye salmon in the world. Critics have said the potential footprint of the project could cover 15 square miles, with an open pit and network of roads and power lines....

Despite voting to stop the mining the company will press on with their destruction. This is a prime example of the lust/greed that we are dealing with.

3. Thank you for bringing this up.
Pebble has put the lie to their repeated assertion that they will only proceed if the local people don't object. Not only the locals but a majority of Alaskans are against this mine, including the late Senator Ted Stevens, who is probably rolling over in his grave.

5. The article says that it is a Canadian/UK partnership; however,
it does not say who owns the land.

6. The State of Alaska does
They're leasing the mineral rights to Pebble Mine Co (undoubtedly for something like a few cents per square mile, if they set lease prices the way the BLM does).

10. Here is the part that bothers me...
The companies have spent hundreds of millions of dollars scoping out the deposit,...

It seems to me that the opposition should have made themselves heard prior to these companies investing so many $$$ in research and exploration.

11. Perhaps they didn't provide much public notice of their intent
"It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet, stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'. "

8. When the masses feel their voices (votes) are not heard, it only ends one way.
Violence. Time and time again throughout history, the 99% has to fight for their rights, and they keep fighting until they win.

We must never forget the lessons of Star Trek, in this case "The Menagerie."
