GOP Sen. Rand Paul halts committee action on ‘No Child’ overhaul
Edited on Wed Oct-19-11 11:07 PM by alp227
Source: Wash. Post

A Senate committee debate on a bipartisan bill to overhaul a key education law came to an abrupt halt Wednesday after Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) invoked a little-used procedural rule that forced a temporary adjournment.

Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, who had worked for more than a year with the ranking Republican, Mike Enzi of Wyoming, to revamp the No Child Left Behind law, was visibly irritated. He said the panel would reconvene Wednesday night after the Senate finished its daily business, and then continue discussions early Thursday morning.

“We can start early, we can stay late,” he said. “We will complete work on this bill.”

The Senate rule, which can be used by any senator, says no committee can meet without unanimous consent once the Senate has been in session for two hours. The rule originated when there were few states and it was important for lawmakers to spend time on the Senate floor. But with the Senate’s growth, the rule has been rarely invoked.

4. These people who adhere to these archaic rules are just plain
ass holes....

I understand that the Senate is different than the house because they are more debate oriented, but to have all these rules that make no sense what so ever in the modern world are living in a dream world...

It's like the kid who grabs the ball and walks off the field because he is losing.

5. Kentucky passed on Jack Conway for this pos? Really?
The damage that has been done to the Senate is actually pretty sad. What use to be our great legislative chamber is no more.

7. Sen. Paul Has Become The Latest Gadfly
In the US Senate and it has taken him less than one year to attain that status, which I am sure is a speed record.

14. Another problem I have w/people today....
is that in general people look to be insulted.

Fruit refers to Rand Paul with respect to his father Ron Paul. Do you feel insulted about Ron Paul too? These Ron Paul folks look to be insulted too when someone disagrees with them.

19. A few things, Jello.
One, please see Reply 17.

Two, I don't "look to be insulted."

Three, I am not "these Ron Paul folks."

Other than that, your post to me was, well, a post.

the "fruit doesn't fall far from the tree" before.

If you say it's common, I'll believe you, though.

9. Say what you want about his tea party beliefs
But don't you wish we had someone on our side who was half as effective at getting what he/she wants? Rand Paul has learned quickly how to pull the levers of government. Perhaps some Democratic Senators can learn a thing or two about being assertive in the name of progressivism.

20. Maybe you could give us some examples of how effective he has been as a Senator?
I thought the Tea Baggers hated the "No Child Left Behind" Policy because it was devised by Ted Kennedy/ I would think he would do everything in his power to change or eliminate it, not halt the meetings that want to do just that....

He really got the TSA to back down on groping children. Frankly, I was proud of him when I saw the YouTube of him grilling the TSA head jackboot.

B. Rand Paul is an ass.

23. Why do they want to "revamp" No Child Left Behind?
It would be better to just repeal it. There is nothing worth keeping there.
