Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi believed still in desert: NTC
Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam is believed to be still at large in Libya's desert, a member of the National Transitional Council said on Thursday after NTC officials said the former Libyan leader had been found and killed.

Abdelmajid Saif al-Nasr told the Qatar-based Al Jazeera satellite channel that Saif al-Islam, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, was last known to have been in the area of Bani Walid and was believed to be "in the desert" around the town.

"But he will be captured soon," said Saif al-Nasr.

1. Oh well.
Daddy's dead, most of his brothers are dead or in jail, and all of his money is gone.

2. Libya's rebels, a house divided
Jockeying for power among Libya's well-armed and fractious new leadership may intensify after the death of deposed autocrat Muammar Gaddafi, an anxious and, for many, joyous moment in a country hungry for stability and impatient to swap the bullet for the ballot box. The interim
government will be determined to ensure that lingering pro-Gaddafi forces cannot launch any rearguard guerrilla insurgency from the countryside that could destabilise the nation and its oil industry.

One of Gaddafi's most politically influential sons, Saif al-Islam, and his security chief Abdullah Sanussi are apparently still at large and may still be able to recruit armed followers.

But perhaps the most important test for the interim National Transitional Council will be manage the enormous expectations of Libya's 6 million people, now freed definitively from the fear that Gaddafi could ever reimpose his long strongman rule.

"There is now this massive expectation. Up to now they've had an excuse that they are running a war. They don't have that now...Everything now has got to happen," John Hamilton, a Libya expert at Cross Border Information, said. "They have to deliver for the people," he said.

8. Heh, funny history with Saif. Saif aligned with Jalil, Jalil tried to resign over corruption...
...Gaddafi refused to let him resign. Saif got bored with trying to reform Libya, two-three years later a guy by the name of Jalil resigned at the sight of violent protests and formed the Transitional National Council of Libya.

Boom! Minds blown, anyone?

6. Interpol, ICC urge Gaddafi's son to turn himself in
The Interpol and the International Criminal Court (ICC) have called Thursday for Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi to turn himself in, promising him safe passage to the Hague after Libyan transitional authority announced Gaddafi's death.

According to a statement issued by the France-based international police union, both institutions promised to coordinate with Interpol member countries to provide him safe passage to the Hague court where he is wanted for crimes against humanity, including murder and persecution.

"Following my discussions with Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo, we agree that it is in the best interests of Saif Al-Islam Gaddafi as well as in the interests of justice that he surrender himself as swiftly as possible and face the charges levelled against him," said Interpol Secretary General Noble.

Earlier in the day, Libya National Transitional Council said ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was killed in battle for Sirte, the last stronghold of Gaddafi regime and his hometown, however, reports said his son Saif Al-Islam was at large in the desert.

7. Only way he can assure himself his own life, turn himself in, have a third party do the transfer.
South Africa would do it for him.

9. Oh! AP reported him wounded and captured. Must have been guarded by Jack Bauer.
Also killed in Sirte was one of Gadhafi's feared sons, Muatassim, while another son — one-time heir apparent Seif al-Islam — was wounded and captured. An AP reporter saw cigarette burns on Muatassim's body.

Reuters reported him surrounded, captured or killed.
Officials said Gaddafi's son Mo'tassim, also seen bleeding but alive in a video, had also died. Another son, heir-apparent Saif al-Islam, was variously reported to be surrounded, captured or killed as conflicting accounts of the day's events crackled around networks of NTC fighters rejoicing in Sirte.

The Guardian reported him arrested but could not confirm it:
Gaddafi's second son, Saif al-Islam, was also said to have been arrested, although the news could not immediately be confirmed.
