GE profit up 18 percent, driven by foreign growth
Source: Yahoo News

(Reuters) - Strong demand from Brazil, Russia and China drove General Electric Co profit up 18 percent in the third quarter despite sluggish economies in the United States and Western Europe.
The largest U.S. conglomerate said on Friday it expects earnings to rise at a double-digit percentage rate next year, following peer United Technologies Corp in trying to assuage investors' fears about Europe's brewing debt crisis.
"Our emerging market growth was very strong," Chief Executive Jeff Immelt told investors on a conference call "It was a good quarter in a volatile environment."

1. Anyone know what their layoff stats have been in recent years?
Just wondering about a direct relationship between higher layoffs and higher corporate profits.

3. Here are your #'s, and they are bad:
GE finished 2009 with 18,000 fewer US workers than it had at the end of 2008, and US headcount is down 31,000 since Immelt’s first full year in 2002. During his tenure, GE workers based in the US as a percentage of total employees has fallen to 44% from 52%...."

2. When there are headlines like this:..
"GE's job killing former CEO is appointed to the Presidents Council on Jobs and Competitiveness. Mr. "Nuts on China" is now heading the US Job Effort"

Anyone surprised that the "competitiveness" part of this is coming from trade deals and funding that happen to benefit GE? (rhetorical)

6. Profits are up, that means their taxes are also up, right?
Oh, wait ... Isn't GE on of the big companies that have Negative Taxes in some years!

Yup. G.E.’s Tax Bill for 2010 Was Negative $3.2 Billion.

7. Proves the point
D or R are just labels that indicate which portion of the population the liars are pandering too.

Guess I am a bit cynical.

9. Dumb question - Are there any electronics companies in the U.S.?
Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 02:23 PM by DaveJ
If G.E. only has 44% U.S. employees, and reducing that number, and pays no taxes, then apparently they have no allegiance to this country. Are there any other companies I might want to buy my next TV from?
