Jobless Rates Fell in Half of US States in September

By: Associated Press

Unemployment rates fell in half of U.S. states last month, a sign that September's pickup in hiring was felt around the country.

The Labor Department says unemployment rates dropped in 25 states, rose in 14 and stayed the same in 11. That's a modest improvement from August, when unemployment rose in 26 states.

Nationwide, employers added 103,000 net jobs in September, nearly double the number created in August.

Still, that's not enough to lower the unemployment rate, which stayed at 9.1 percent for the third straight month.

1. VERY misleading header, kpete...
The "jobless" and "Under-Employed" rate continues to get worse. What has dropped is the "official unemployment rate", which does not count people who are no longer eligible for UI.

There are more unemployed and desperate in America than ever before.

I usually like your posts, but intentional mis-direction bothers me, and that's what it feels like you've done here.

3. U3 has NOTHING to do with eligibility for UI benefits
All you have to have done is look for work, just once, in the last 4 weeks to be included. You can have never have claimed benefits, or have exhausted them 30 yrs ago and it makes no difference whatsoever.

2. Not really an improvement.
45,000 of those jobs that were "created" were actually verizon workers who were rehired after going on strike.

When you cut past the bullshit, only 58,000 jobs were created last month.

4. When does seasonal hiring begin?
One of my friends just got hired by Nordstroms for seasonal work; but I dont put much stock into lone anecdotes.
