D.E.A. Bans Chemicals Used in ‘Bath Salts’
Source: NY Times

The Drug Enforcement Administration took emergency action on Friday to ban three synthetic stimulants used to make products that are marketed at head shops and on the Web as “bath salts,” but are actually used as recreational drugs that mimic the effects of cocaine, LSD and methamphetamine.

The emergency measure places these substances — mephedrone, methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and methylone — under the D.E.A.’s most restrictive category for at least a year, while they study whether they should be permanently banned. This classification is reserved for substances with high potential for abuse and no accepted use under medical supervision.

These products, sometimes called plant food, are sold in powder or crystal form under names like Bliss, Purple Wave, Vanilla Sky and Ivory Wave. Though not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for consumption, they have become increasingly popular, especially among teenagers and young adults, the D.E.A. said.

“These chemicals pose a direct and significant threat, regardless of how they are marketed, and we will aggressively pursue those who attempt their manufacture and sale,” Michele M. Leonhart, the agency’s administrator, said in a statement.

6. Yes and No.
These are part of the recent batch of analog drugs, which are slight variants of previously known drugs. Actually testing them in a controlled environment would be unethical, if not illegal, so the studies done are on adverse effects post-exposure, which doesn't give reliable data on frequency of adverse effects to frequency of use.

Good luck with the phone!

5. Good.
From yesterday:

BANGOR, Maine — Police found a Juniper Street house filled with blood spatter and pools of blood after a 22-year-old man on bath salts destroyed the two bathrooms inside, cutting himself badly in the process, Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards said.

Benjamin Hatfield, 22, who was involved in the 2010 street fight that ended with the shooting death of 19-year-old John “Bobby” Surles, was found by police on Wednesday sitting shirtless on the front steps of his relative’s house, nursing several deep wounds.

Officers Jason Linkletter and Joshua Kuhn described Hatfield as “distraught, freaking out, paranoid, delusional, and unable to describe how he was cut so badly,” Edwards said.

Hatfield’s symptoms are typical of bath salt consumers.http://bangordailynews.com/2011/10/20/news/bangor/bangor-man-on-bath-salts-destroys-bathrooms-of-relative-injuring-himself-badly/?ref=latest

This is not suitable for human consumption - you might as well snort Drano.:puke:

I'm also pro legalization of hemp.

10. I agree. This stuff is worse than crack and is destroying many
lives. I have seen people on this and people who use it long term. They become so paranoid and (often) dangerous. Pot of course, should be legalized, but this stuff should definitely be banned.

9. Agreed
Hawaii's Natural High shop owner Greg Azus said he doesn't sell synthetic drugs, but he gets one or two military members a day stopping by his Waikiki store asking for them.

"It's consistent," Azus said. "It's like I know what they are going to ask." He added that "you can pretty much tell" the individuals are in the military because of their short hair and appearance.

He said that he probably gets as many requests these days for Bath Salts as for Spice.

"I'm not into (selling) that," Azus said. "A lot of people are greedy, and they sell it. It's not something that's good for you, and it's not something that I want to have anything to do with."

We needed another front in the War on Drugs, and they needed another reason to seize assets.

Edited to add: In before the "What about teh kidz?!?!?!" response.

11. Ron Paul called. He wants his insanity back.
If you can grow yourself some bath salts in the window box, you go for it.

Otherwise, I'm all for regulating and controlling them, just like nuclear waste.

14. The pro life movement called, they want their unrelenting demands for control over the bodies
of others back.

Yes, bath salts people willingly ingest are exactly like nuclear waste. Remember the great bath salts spill a few years back with thousands killed? Yeah? Me either.

No, what you want is control of what other people do because it offends your delicate sensibilities. Which puts you in such delightful company as the pro-lifers and Westboro church. I support bodily autonomy in all things, you only do it for things you like. No hypocrisy here.
