Scuffles erupt as Oakland protesters march on city hall

By Reuters
Tuesday, October 25, 2011

OAKLAND, Calif (Reuters) – Police and protesters scuffled in Northern California on Tuesday as more than 1,000 people marched on city hall in Oakland to voice anger over arrests at an “Occupy Wall Street” camp.

Police surrounded a group of demonstrators on a downtown Oakland street, taking several into custody before setting off what appeared to be a stun grenade to disperse the throng.

The bulk of the crowd headed for city hall, with leaders saying they intended to reclaim Frank Ogawa Plaza, the site of two weeks of protests against economic inequality before police firing beanbags cleared the area before dawn.

At the plaza, police ordered protesters to disperse and were met with some cooperation.

Oakland's police chief resigned suddenly two weeks ago, after an obscure Federal judge resurrected an eight-year-old corruption case and threatened the OPD with a federal takeover. It was at this point that we started to hear all that crap about rats and crime and whatnot in Ogawa Oscar Grant Plaza. And now, it's come to this. :tinfoilhat:

How can a peaceful march be attacked like that? In the USA? I'm sure if it was armed teabaggers threating to kill democrats and socialists, the cops wouldn't have even been there!

the protesters threw rocks and bottles at them, so they had to respond.

Of course, it is unlikely that anyone threw rocks and bottles at the cops, but even if someone did, those who did were probably agents provocateurs, since that almost always turns out to be the case when cops get violent because, they say, protesters have resorted to violence.

Besides, even if someone--agent provocateur or not--did throw a rock or a bottle at the cop, that does not mean the cops must respond by violently assaulting all the protesters there: men, women, children, the elderly, the handicapped.
