Obama unveils student loan relief plan in Denver campus appearance
Source: Wash. Post

President Obama announced Wednesday that he will authorize changes in federal policy to make college loans more affordable and easier to repay for millions of economically trapped borrowers.

The president’s plan, which he will impose by executive authority, is aimed at addressing a sector of the credit market that has become increasingly problematic in the bad economy and that gained renewed attention through the Occupy Wall Street movement, which has made student-loan relief one of its objectives.

The initiative was also an effort to reach out to a voting bloc that was crucial to Obama’s winning 2008 coalition, one that he will need again next year.

Obama told thousands of cheering students at the University of Colorado’s Denver campus that his administration would no longer wait for Congress to respond to the rising burden of higher-education costs. In his remarks, the president said he and first lady Michelle Obama empathized with their plight.

1. Easier To Repay?
Why not just forgive the damn debt outright? Where the hell do people think college students or former students are going to work to repay 50, 60, or $70,000 in loans? Ain't going to happen at $10 an hour. Hell, I used to know a guy who in debt $100K-plus for a Phd. Oh, wait, the school must have had a spot for him later at $50,000 annually to help him out. Sorry. I had a brain fart.

3. I'm a 100K in debt for my PhD
I hope to god I get a permanent position this year. I'm still drafting my letter to Obama, but I'm curious about this plan. If my debt is lowered to a manageable place, I'm fine paying them if I know there's an end in sight.
