Anonymous downs Oakland police site after violence
Source: SC Magazine

The hacktivist group Anonymous is making good on its promise of digital retaliation against the Oakland Police Department for the force it used against protesters this week.

A distributed denial-of-service attack against the department's website -- www.oaklandpolice.com -- is underway, and the website currently is unreachable.

In addition, members of the collective have begun releasing information about Oakland police officers, and the call is out for additional help.

"The time has come to retaliate against Oakland police via all non-violent means, beginning with 'doxing' of individual officers and particularly higher-ups involved in the department's conduct of late," read an Anonymous statement, posted to Pastebin.

An Oakland police spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment.

4. Doxing references the public release of information about individuals.

Anonymous' operation, dubbed "OpUprise," comes in response to the actions Tuesday night of Oakland police trying to squash a largely peaceful demonstration organized to protest the clearing of an encampment where Occupy Oakland members had been staying.

8. Oh please.
You are assuming the police and the government play by the rules. The rules do not apply to them, only the peasants.

9. more pragmatically, their punishment could end up being far worse than the sin
criminals could target their families, which I would not wish on the worst cop.

11. In that case, if they can't go out and arrest Anonymous maybe they should
be law abiding citizens don't you think? Maybe they should rethink their penchant for busting heads with impunity.

16. I think you are reaching a little too far. The protesters punishment has been far worse
than their sins. Do you have the same feelings for them?

21. of course. But it's not either/or, it's more ''how do we get cops to realize they're on the wrong
side of the line?''

Set up their wife and kids for a home invasion doesn't win anyone over any more than invading a country reduces terrorism.

12. If I were a cop who thought it was OK to beat and shoot at citizens
and I realized that it might actually affect me and my family adversely to shoot someone directly in the face I would rethink my actions.

Cops can actually figure this stuff out. Even bully cops.

13. Someone posted yesterday that Bologna said he'd do it again. Wasn't he doxed?
I don't know. I think the left is much better off bringing first responders and other government employees under the 99% umbrella than giving them reason to join in solidarity against the left. Wasn't that what happened in the Sixties and Seventies?

If it were only the cops responsible for hurting people, it might be acceptable. But I am not sure this is serving any good purpose.

14. The doxed are individuals who actually hurt people
So generalities about all cops doesn't apply in this. And yes, the 99% would like to include cops, but some don't want to be included.

Mr. Bologna is just a strutting bully who can't shut up the bluster because he never learned to.

17. As an employee...
paid by taxpayer money, my salary schedule and my school location have been made public in the local media. As a nurse, my license and listed address are public (I have a PO box for safety). I deal with crazies, angry parents, and people of every strip. Anyone looking for info on me doesn't have to look too hard. Same with the police.

20. Anonymous is just an extension of non-violent protest to cyberspace.
I commend those who use the Internet to extend these protests. The Internet is just another avenue of protest. I see no difference between physically "gumming up the works" by creating a human chain and the DOS efforts by Anonymous.
