Authorities Charge 16 Officers in Widespread Inquiry (NYPD)
Source: NY Times

The charges against 16 New York police officers who were arraigned on Friday afternoon as a result of a long-running grand jury investigation into the fixing of tickets for colleagues, family members and friends, show that it was a highly organized systematic practice citywide.

The charges, detailed in a huge stack of paper made up of nearly two dozen indictments with roughly 1,600 criminal counts, include hundreds of instances in which 10 of the officers allegedly fixed traffic tickets. Six other officers were accused of engaging in a wide variety of corruption crimes. The charges were unsealed Friday morning in State Supreme Court in the Bronx.

Many of the counts are misdemeanors, though all the officers, except for two, were charged with felonies.

Ten of the officers are officials in the union that represents police officers, the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, the city’s largest police union, and those officers essentially served as liaisons for fixing tickets. Also among those charged were two sergeants and a lieutenant.

Sixteen New York Police Department officers pleaded not guilty to charges of widespread fixing of traffic tickets as well as more serious crimes, in the second scandal to hit the force in a week.

It was also a rare assault by prosecutors on the police and their powerful union, the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association. Hundreds of police and friends crowded the courthouse entrance in a muscular show of support for the accused men.

An alleged drug dealer managed the barbershops, used Ramos’ car and his phone to organize deals, while Ramos himself is accused of transporting what he thought was heroin, as well as attempted robbery.

On Tuesday, eight serving or retired officers were among 12 people arrested on charges of conspiracy to smuggle assault rifles, handguns and other items worth more than $1 million.

4. The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association should be disbanned.
NYPD can go to hell along with any other police force who dismisses the 1st amendment.

9. Then the good guys need to once & for all...
Cross that damn BLUE LINE and do what is correct for a change! Unions are for protecting workers rights not for protecting the cops crimes. Just saying.
