Despite contracts, GOP Convention officials tell Tampa hotels they want cheaper rooms, higher fees
Source: St. Petersburg Times

TAMPA — A crowd of hotel managers gathered in the ballroom of the Wyndam Tampa Westshore on Wednesday expecting a routine update on plans for the 2012 Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Instead, a new convention contractor delivered a shock: Hotels are expected to throw out year-old room contracts with the convention's Republican organizers and sign new agreements with lower room rates.

"There were a couple hundred folks in the room slightly gasping,'' said Ron Alicandro, general manager of the Westin Tampa Bay. "We've all got signed contracts. None of us can understand it.'' Pinellas hoteliers got the same message at a meeting Thursday in St. Petersburg.

.....

The deals struck with hotels a year ago were made by Republican staffers no longer working on the arrangements committee.

But, but,.... we thought Republicans "loved business"!

Think the hotel executives already holding these contracts are gonna go along with Republicans now trying to trash these agreements?

It's time to kick this trash to the curb. I'd love to see the hotel execs show this crowd the way to the state line.

3. What you do is, you wait until they show up and say, "But we had reservations!"
Yes, and WE had a contract.

Now, fuck-off.

5. Well they do need to conserve to enjoy Tampa's "premier entertainment"
Strip clubs.
World Class, top shelf, highest quality, strip clubs.

Swear to God, look it up on the "Internets".

4. So they negotiated these contracts a year ago in order to "lock down" the hotel rooms.
Then, when it's less than a year away and most other conventions have gone elsewhere -- they want to cancel the contracts and start over -- with cheaper rates.

Nice.

It is all about them, isn't it. Everyone else is just there to be played.

8. I'd be curious to know what the contracted rates are
and how much they want to lower them

Beyond that, this is yet another example of a political party that's become a bully, demanding it's way, unwilling to compromise or give an inch. They have no sense of honor and feel no shame over their actions and demands.

Bullies.

9. I hate to say it serves the hotels right
I remember when even a liberal mayor like Pam Iorio thought this was a win. Tampa is going to end up in hock, sued to hell and back by a combo of protesters and tea party scum, and that is not including the inevitable Tea Party vs Romney fight.

18. So tear up the contract
and don't sign new ones. All the rooms will get booked because the GOP will need them anyway.

19. that's about EXACTLY what should happen
I work at a hotel, and I would bet my next paycheck that every one of those rooms were booked at a cut-rate to begin with. If I were those hotel owners (and I can say this with some assurance, 'cause I know my own employer's mind pretty well after all these years)
I would INCREASE the rate for those days, for EXACTLY the reason you stated (unless the whole thing gets moved to another city, they HAVE to sleep/shower somewhere), and I would tell every single one of them "you guys are the ones that have to take the hit on this rate because your bosses/betters thought it would be a pretty good get to try and fuck us all over, ILLEGALLY, so go bitch to them about it."
