Rep. Eric Cantor draws cheers, jeers in U-M economic speech

DETROIT FREE PRESS EDUCATION WRITER

A speech from U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia, the House majority leader, this afternoon relied heavily on traditional Republican beliefs about government – much to the displeasure of dozens of protesters at the University of Michigan.

In a speech on the Ann Arbor campus that lasted about 30 minutes and a question-and-answer session following, Cantor repeatedly stressed themes of self-reliance and limited government.

About two dozen stood up with their backs to Cantor during the question-and-answer time. They repeatedly interrupted Cantor with shouts, including heckling him on gay marriage and health care. Supportive members of the audience repeatedly applauded to cover the protesters.

The crowd of protesters started outside. They were loud enough that their chants could be heard inside during Cantor’s speech. Many of them held tombstones with slogans like “RIP Middle Class” painted on them. At one point, one protester paraded around with a coffin.

1. While I dont agree with cantor and think he is an asshole I dont agree with disrupting a speech
being given, it just smacks to me atleast as a lack of manners.

2. What manners does he have? He talks about the President of the
USA as if he was some criminal in chains. This man does not deserve respect. That is something you earn.

3. Agreed. HE is disrespectful of the President and millions of Americans.
He talks down to us.

And I simply do NOT, EVER accept that, from anyone.

You have a point? Then explain it to me, with proof and actual fact.

Talk down to me and you WILL get the same in return, until such time as you act adult and mature.

11. More of right-wing apology.
Same old from that one; we need to be nicer to those that would destroy the country.

Mean, disrespectful Democrats are ruining everything.

8. sorry but fuck manners
manners seems like the most irrelevant thing in the world when it comes to our politicians today. Those fuckers being all polite to each other while they gut our safety net. Fuck them.

And they're not even that polite, the Super Committee left their shit all over their meeting room for the peons to clean up. Lazy fucking elites.

9. You're right...
When Eric comes to speak the least people could do, is to stand up and vomit.

12. Remember the Reverse Peristalsis Painters?
http://www.vdb.org/titles/undeniable-evidence

basically, in honor of Dan Quayle's Portland fundraiser for Bob Packwood, a group of protesters armed themselves with a hearty breakfast of mashed potatoes tinted red, white, or blue. Then, when the time was nigh for the VP's motorcade to pass, they drank some ipecac to trigger their "interesting" flag-themed tribute to the passing dignitaries.

15. Sounds like the kind of salute Eric deserves.
Skip the ipecac trigger tough, Eric is a walking talking vomit trigger.

10. Manners Matter?
What sort of "manners" is it to promise jobs to folks and then do anything but? Is it supposed to buy them a "pass" that they spoke as tho they were/are ignorant of what's REALLY happening in this nation???

Reminds me of a steward dutifully cleaning out ash trays while the ship is going down - you know, duty an all that!

20. Eleven years ago I would have agreed about the disrespect, but today's Republicans
are a byproduct of George Bush's in-your-face, with-us-or-against-us brand of "leading". Bold, public stands against them hits them where it hurts because they're all about creating "public perception" with their silly slogans meant to deceive the public.

16. It probably was to a hand picked crowd and it still went that bad.
I'd say Eric is about as popular as a stale shit sandwich these days anywhere he slithers.
