French satirical newspaper firebombed after prophet Mohammad announcement

The offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo have been destroyed by a petrol bomb, a day after it named the Prophet Mohammad as its “editor-in-chief” for this week’s issue.

By Henry Samuel, Paris8:05AM GMT 02 Nov 2011
The fiercely anti-clerical magazine said the move, which included renaming the publication “Sharia Hebdo”, was intended to "celebrate" the victory of Islamist party Ennhada in Tunisia's election.

Charlie Hedbo's editor-in-chief, known as Charb, told France Info radio: "We no longer have a newspaper. All our equipment has been destroyed or has melted."

No injuries have been reported

A single Molotov cocktail was thrown at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris’s 20th arrondissement at around 1am. The ensuing fire was rapidly put out, but a large amount of material in the office was destroyed, police said.

5. Yeah...
...because Muslims have never raged against perceived slights or retaliated violently to parodies of satire of their religion....

I know Murdoch is an asshole - but sometimes, a pen is just a pen.

2. Religious loonies are the same everywhere
Any criticism, satire or challenge is ultimately met with violence. I guess a verbal
counter-argument is not in their repetoire, be it in France, Denmark or Tennessee.

"A fiercely anti-clerical" publication--if I had the money, I'd donate it to restore it.

3. When you poke the hornet's nest
don't be too surprised when you get stung. I condemn this violent retaliation, but the editor can't possibly be oblivious to the track record where insults against Mohammad are concerned. Personally, I come down on the side of free speech, so I'll use my time on the soapbox to ask what's sofa king funny about Mohammad anyway? Out of countless targets of derision, why pick the singular one most likely to draw the ire of extremists who have no compunction about making you go *BOOM*? Helluva legacy you pursue: 'I died for making a fucking joke about a religious figure who's been dead for 1,300-odd years.'

6. I personally stand behind those who...
have been brave enough to "poke the hornets nest" in the past & those who do it today...Effective change does not come easy & it almost always requires "poking the hornets nest".

OWS is a prime example of "poking the hornet's nest"...Look at the "stings" many have had to endure...There is young man in critical condition after getting "stung" for his part in "poking the hornets nest".

9. In my vocabulary, 'brave' and 'stupid' have separate meanings
What, exactly, would you 'change?' People's right to practice Islam? I'm not trying to be obtuse, but I see zero relationship between a editor trying to find 'humor' in the religion of others and the unprovoked attack by police of a peaceful OWS protestor. I see the lame attempt at 'humor' at the expense of someone's religion as having more in common with (insert random RW talking-head asshole) taking cheap shots at liberals by referring to them as 'dirty hippies.'

12. They should have done something safer, like immerse a crucifix in urine,
or fling shit at the Virgin Mary,

It's safer to insult some religions than others. I can't even remember the last time the Pope or the Archbishop of Canterbury issued a fatwa.

13. French Newspaper Office Firebombed Over Muhammed Satire
Source: Israel National News

The offices of a French newspaper were destroyed by a firebomb early Wednesday over its satirical invitation to the Islamic Prophet Muhammed.

The newspaper, Charlie Hebdo, is a satirical weekly. A firebomb, or “Molotov cocktail” was lobbed into the offices of the paper at about 1:00 a.m., igniting a blaze.

The attack came a day after the paper had announced it was naming Islam's founder, Prophet Muhammed, as its “editor-in-chief” for this week's issue. The statement said: “In order fittingly to celebrate the Islamist Ennahda's win in Tunisia and the NTC (National Transitional Council) president's promise that sharia would be the main source of law in Libya, Charlie Hebdo asked Mohammed to be guest editor.”

The back page of the paper was to feature a picture of Muhammed wearing a red nose, with the caption, “Yes, Islam is compatible with humor.” The front page, renamed “Sharia Hebdo,” was to likewise feature a picture of the Muslim prophet, captioned, “100 lashes if you don't die of laughter!”

Apparently, some adherents find Islam to not be compatible with humor.

25. these "Muslims" obviously worship Mohammed.
Despite all Mohammed's ranting against those idolizing him, that's ironically what these Islamic fundamentalists do.
