13. Another "death by doctor"
Having been through it with both my parents, I have realized how often operations on elderly people are the cause of their deaths. Overeager surgeons recommend an operation for a person who is not in the best of health. If the patient comes out of anathesia, the operation is considered a success. Days or weeks later complications ensue and then its just a matter of time before the patient is dead. In the meantime, there are hundreds of thousands of dollars spent trying to keep the patient alive in what can only be described as medical torture. If this is the case with Andy, he's lucky that it happened quickly.

And didn't John Murtha die from complications of surgery? It's so sad, and such a tragedy when someone dies from a medical procedure that is supposed to improve their quality of life.

30. died "of complications following minor surgery"
so no, he was not expecting it, as someone else suggested, and no, it was not because he no longer had anything to do, as someone else suggested. (Why do so many people comment without reading the linked article? Always a DU problem.)

rfranklin is right... surgery is considered a success if the patient merely survives. At 92, no surgery is minor. The risks even of anesthesia and the high rate of infections in hospitals are greatly magnified for the elderly whose bodies no longer have the restorative/combative facilities they used to.

63. take some immunology classes and see how mysterious it really is
back in the day I was a bio-dork. Love that stuff. Immunolgy classes are the hardest Ive ever taken by far. A lot of it has to do with how much stuff they don't know yet. Very interesting stuff. And like real science, discoveries are made often that change the paradigm of most of the field.

There is a phenomenon where after receiving some manner of wound, people will sometimes develop appendicitis. Correlative? not quite. It happens enough where science has noticed it. A Phenomenon. A buddy of mine slipped on the iron and s-k-i-n-n-e-d his shin last fall. Pretty big wound. 3 weeks later, pow. Appendicitis. When I was 19, I went to get a tattoo. 1 week later, pow, appendectomy.

Ben Rothlesberger, Steelers quarterback. A few weeks after winning his Super Bowl, he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle. 2 weeks later, pow. Appendectomy.

Its kinda crazy.

82. I had an anesthesiology nurse tell me of a doctor in her hospital..
... who is known for doing high risk surgery on elderly patients and keeping them alive for 30 days so he doesn't get the "credit" for the death. He manipulates the family, giving them hope, and then drops the bomb at the thirty day mark.

Even a checkup at a hospital can be fatal for the elderly and there weakened immune systems.

Sometimes I wouldn't even look at 60 minutes commentary until 45 minutes of the hour just to hear what would Andy say. When I heard his last show was Oct 2, it pained me to watch it. But I did see his farewell clip this morning. He was an icon for 60 Minutes along with the late Ed Bradley.

Sorry he didn't get to enjoy his (Semi-)retired life. May Andy R. rest in peace.

76. An insightful, witty man who provided decades of food for thought on 60 Minutes
Rooney was a unique presence on TV. 60 Minutes will not feel the same now that he's gone. Who could replace him? In addition to his insightful weekly commentary he also served the US in WWII. :patriot:

93. Growing up, I thought he was an annoying crank
I especially remember being furious over his Kurt Cobain commentary. But, as the years went by, I found myself agreeing with him more and more (some of his anti-Iraq war commentaries were great), and realized he just how wise he was.
