Employers post most job openings in 3 years
Source: AP Excite

By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Employers advertised more jobs in September than at any other point in the past three years, a hopeful sign that companies may step up hiring.

Businesses and governments posted 3.35 million job openings, the Labor Department said Tuesday. That's a 7 percent increase from August and the most since August 2008, one month before the financial crisis intensified.

Even with the gain, there's heavy competition for each job. Nearly 14 million people were out of work in September, which means an average 4.2 unemployed workers were competing for each opening. That's slightly better than August, but it is still more than twice the 2 to 1 ratio that economists say is healthy.

Companies typically take from one to three months to fill a position. So the increase in postings suggests hiring could pick up in the coming months.

1. Yes, but most of those jobs are for interns to help hide GOP candidates' 'indiscretions.'
I simply don't want that job.

5. As it says, it SUGGESTS hiring could pick up.

Company anticipates money available to hire.
Company collects job pool.
Poof, money's not there afterall.
Job pool is discarded.

For academia, it would be analogous (the group doing the hiring doesn't get applied-for federal grant money).

6. Cool but how do you find out what companies are hiring.
It'd depend on the business whether it's really good or just meh news.

It is the holiday season coming up. Retail alone should be doing some holiday hiring as well as USPS, FedEx and UPS.

7. Okay a few questions...
1) are they paying a living wage?

2) are they full time positions?

3) are the discriminating against older people? (I know it's against the law but it still widely happens)

if the answer to any of the above questions is no, then they aren't expanding. They are just rearranging the deck chairs.

9. They are going by postings? How do they differentiate between legitimate
openings and recruiters just looking to plump up their database so that they can pursue employers to contract them?
