Nancy Pelosi provides Newt Gingrich ethics report (1280 pages of the Ethics Committee report)
Source: San Francisco Chronicle

Nancy Pelosi provides Newt Gingrich ethics report

In case you haven’t been watching cable TV, two former House Speakers named Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich are having a bit of a fracas related to all that Gingrich baggage about which GOP primary voters in Iowa appear to be blissfully ignorant.

Pelosi, the San Francisco Democrat and now House minority leader, promised to release records that are public but haven’t seen much sunshine lately about the congressional ethics investigation of Gingrich back in the day.

Gingrich said that would be foul play and promised to retaliate, claiming Pelosi was threatening to disclose non-public information. But Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said Pelosi was “clearly referring to the extensive amount of information that is in the public record, including the comprehensive committee report with which the public may not be fully aware.”

Hammill helpfully provided public links and we provide them here.

Dems have absolutely no sense of political strategy. NONE! Wait until Newt wins the nomimation, then crush him AND the Republican party.

26. This helps Newt get the nomination.
Remember, Repthug voters only care about corruption if a Democrat is accused of it. And they have a hatred of Nancy Pelosi that's almost as extreme and pathological as their hatred of Barack Obama. The fact that she's attacking Gingrich will make the Repigs even more likely to support him.

Not so much. Anything that helps Gingrich to win the nomination is a setback for Republicans come November 2012, whether they realize it or not.

40. Romney's "electability" is overrated.
He looks (relatively) electable during the primary campaign because of the "I'm not as crazy as these other guys" effect. But if he's nominated, those "other guys" will all be gone, and he'll be compared instead to an opponent in President Obama who's actually sane. At that point "seems sane by virtue of comparison to Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann" wouldn't be so much of a selling point.

126. Two major differences:
Edited on Fri Dec-09-11 12:04 PM by No Elephants
1. When Romney ran for Gov, he had yet to do a single public flip flop. He had run against Kennedy as a liberal (and Massachusetts was accustomed to liberal Republicans) and he ran for Governor as a liberal.

2. Massachusetts does not put a whole lot of emphasis on a Governor (though it should) because the Legislation has been well over 90% Democratic for a very long time. They can override any guberenatorial veto, if they wish--and every Gov knows that very well. Some people (idiots) actually believe it is better to have a Rethug Governor because always having all power in one party is unhealthy.

neither of those things apply if Romney runs for Pres.

47. i dunno---waiting for more ____ to hit the fan re: Bain Capital's offshore tax haven accounts
Edited on Wed Dec-07-11 09:03 PM by wordpix
Rich Mitt's investment tax havens offshore won't be big with the 99%-ers.

http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2011/04/12/157766/mitt-romney-tax-havens/

snip:

As the Los Angeles Times reported in 2007:

Romney gained no personal tax benefit from the legal operations in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. But aides to the Republican presidential hopeful and former colleagues acknowledged that the tax-friendly jurisdictions helped attract billions of additional investment dollars to Romney’s former company, Bain Capital, and thus boosted profits for Romney and his partners.
By routing investments through shell companies set up in Bermuda or the Caymans, companies like Bain Capital allow their investors to avoid the 35 percent corporate tax rate they would have to pay in the U.S., leaving more revenues for executive compensation. Romney might have closed corporate tax loopholes in Massachusetts, but he predictably does not feel the same way about the tax laws that allowed his company to operate freely in these offshore tax havens. He recently advocated for a one-time repatriation holiday to allow corporations hiding income offshore to bring it home to America at dramatically lower tax rates, and he supports substantially lowering the corporate tax rate. more...

She's a powerful woman.
She's a Democrat.

The only way Pelosi would get more hate from Repigs is if she were a lesbian black atheist with a foreign-sounding name.

77. If your premise is true regarding GOP voters
Newt would have not been forced to step down as Speaker. Granted this is old news to a degree, yet it hardly has the effect of enhancing Newt's image as it served to remind the media and the public just what a sleaze he really is.

That said, Newt will not be the nominee and that was never a serious option for the GOP, any more than Bachman, Perry or Cain. This is all pretty much media side-show & in some cases book tours.

132. Meh. That's okay among us chickens. However, in reality,
Romneycare was modeled on Hillarycare. Romney ain't smart enough or creative enough to have come up with anything on his own. About all he did was provide bad figures to the legislature.

Truth is, the Legislature and Romney could not agree. Massachusetts was about to lose a boatload of federal money unless it adopted a plan. Ted Kennedy, rest his soul, banged Romney's head togther with the heads of our Democratic legislative leacers and eh, voila, so called Romneycare.

Romney can't backpedal now because, to show what a "get stuff done" guy he was, he such made a big deal of how he got the liberal Massachusetts legislature to adopt a health care plan.

She realizes that Newt is NOT going to get the nomination, so she's putting this out there at the time when it can do the most damage, ie: with Newt at the top of the polls and heading into the Iowa primary next month.

This will cause fighting and distress among the R candidates. It might even lead to the other candidates picking up on the theme and bashing Newt with it. None of that works in the favor of Rs, as it reminds voters of everything that was bad about the Rs back when Newt ran things. It also reinforces what the public is beginning to see as the clown show aspect of the R primary process.

15. I don’t know about that. The Republican base only hates it
when a candidate tells the truth or makes sense. The extremist Republican base that controls their primaries seem to especially favor any candidate who has been shown to be a scoundrel— the worse the behavior, the better they like the candidate. Don’t forget, after the allegations of sexual harassment, Cain’s numbers soared and he collected a huge amount in donations specifically because of the charges.

The fact that Pelosi is the one who revealed his ethics violations will automatically make them side with Gingrich, because for too many people on both sides—but especially for right-wingers—this is just a sports contest, and they will defend their “team” against the rival “team,” no matter what.

Look for his numbers to go up and for him to collect more money in small donations from the base.

75. actually
don't think Newt ever had any intentions of running seriously.. i think Newt, as With most of the rest of them, is part of a G.O.P. pundit (grifter) class.. a good portion of these folks write (actually ghost write) books, cash in with fokkks, become lobbyists, or work for think tanks, when the party is in power they milk the system.. this gives them name recognition among the conservatives,

with so little flexabity among them for running against conservative conventional wisdom, the candidates themselves are as interchangable as christmas light bulbs.. when one burns out your mearly replace it.. it now appears its newt's turn to start to burn out, mark my word that at some point (perhaps 2016) Anne Coulter will be called into the ring, the past will be severly edited, and even the craziest will be in the rotation..

keep your eyes on fokkks, and Karl Rove.. the press and the superpacs are the life blood of the movment.. the national Republican party is rapidly becomeing nothing more than a facade for appearances sake..

as for Newt it was just his turn..last one standing in NC will probably fight Mitt, for the nomination.. the rest of the folks can go back to lobbying and grifting,

was absolutely mystified when all the women he'd groped or tried to grope over the years started coming forward. I get the sense that, in their own minds, these folks simply don't believe they did anything wrong, hence, "no skeletons in the closet."

I'm waiting for one or more of Gingrich's former wives/lovers to speak out. I suspect Newt the Bewt has a whole shoestore of "other shoes" about to drop.

Speaker of the House was well-respected, one was admonished, one was a woman, one a man, one was thoughtful, deliberate, caring, one was after each and every dollar he could amass for himself, and lying about how he did it.

Nope, this was not about "a bit of a fracas", this is about ethics, and integrity.

"a bit of a fracas", understates the matter, for sure.

If I remember correctly--and I'm not at all sure that I do--only excerpts of the report were released to the press, which sat on them during the '00 election cycle. For several years at least it was not yet complete.

I remember asking about it at the GPO office in the late '90s, and getting laughed at, but I don't remember the details. It was probably because I asked if I could have a copy, "for my own amusement;" but it could also have been that the report was never officially completed, which is one way Congress keeps sensitive material out of the grubby hands of the unwashed.

Romney's potential appeal is underestimated. Particularly among the "middle" who are the pendulum when it comes to general elections.

The vast majority of those who come out to vote in November do not follow politics, and if the mood of the country is sour we could be in for a close fight.

144. What?
Is she trying to use reverse psychology? Thinking that anything she does (cue the hatred and contempt that right wing-nuts hold for her) will convince them that Newt is the one to choose?

With the oily Mittens gaining popularity now, getting endorsements from all over and regaining points on the polls, I would think she should be going after him.

Gingrich is unelectable and it would be a shoo-in for Obama if he actually became their nominee.

Paul and Romney are the ones to knock off their pedestals, right now.
