E-Voting's Flaws Out In Open

SAN FRANCISCO, May 1, 2004

After three decades of punch cards, California's Alameda County went high-tech - spending millions on touch-screen voting machines made by Diebold Election Systems.

But in March, California voters were left hanging - not with chads - but computer glitches that kept many Diebold machines from starting, CBS News Correspondent Trish Regan reports.

Thousands of voters were turned away, and most alarming was a software bug that credited thousands of votes to the wrong candidate.

"On election morning, when something like that happens it's very very frustrating, and it's indescribable what goes through your mind," said Elaine Ginnold, the assistant registrar of voters for Alameda County.

1. remember Kathleen Harris
we democrats in sarasota county, florida, sure do - and so should the rest of the country -- now sarasota county comissioners (read republicans) have decided they will use electronis voting machines WITHOUT PAPER VERIFICATION SLIPS AVAILABLE - i think my vote will probably be wasted - but - SCREW THEM I'M STILL VOTING

5. But paper printer "smear"--hoo boy,
Look what this sniveling lackey had to say about providing a 'paper trail.'

"Dealing with paper at the pools, paper printers jam, they smear, they have error messages – we just see a nightmare," Ginnold said.

So they can't do what millions of gas pumps all across the country do on a routine basis . . . doesn't even make good non-sense.

8. That's right. This is pure horseshit! Diebold has produced a paper
trail for years. There's no way we would have been burdened with Arnold if it hadn't been for these machines.

7. They're just repeating the vendors' lies. FUD, Fear, Uncertainty
They sell by "FUD", Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt.

It's a classic sales technique in the computer business and is used to channel a prospect's thinking into believing that your equipment is the only way to remove the FUD.

We've used it for decades.

9. Do you think any Bank in the world would use systems as flawed as these
Just who do they think they are talking to. I can use an ATM card in almost any country of the world and have direct access to my account.

WITH A PAPER TRAIL

Not only that but each transaction has an accounting number next to it. So each debit and credit has it's own trail too.

Just how stupid do these people think we are

14. I have used ATMs in 3rd world countries
Like the Philippines and they work just fine. They give me a receipt, I can check my balance, and they are accurate.

Whats more they convert to the local currency accurately too.

This whole thing stinks of a RIPOFF in the works

16. If I can use my ATM in Tahiti, and get a perfectly readable "paper trail"
in French, Tahitian OR English, why is there such a "problem" here??

F R A U D

If they are so sure that their "products" work, why not just have a "one-time-special" , where they would have BOTH paper and electronic. Paper would be counted FIRST, and IF the electronic "matched", that would allay fears somewhat, but they will NEVER do this, because they know what would happen..
