TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran said the United States had taken Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s place as the foe of the Iraqi people, following the circulation of pictures of US troops abusing Iraqi prisoners.


"One year after Saddam's collapse, the Iraqis dare not celebrate his fall, but they are fighting the Americans, which means that the Iraqis believe that the US has taken Saddam's place," Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi said Sunday in his weekly press conference.


The images depicted prisoners, some naked, in humiliating, sexually suggestive poses. Some of the pictures showed US military personnel pointing and laughing at prisoners. snip


"The US is in Iraq (news - web sites) only to get oil and protect its long term interests there," Asefi added.
