Report says Canadian salmon industry in danger of collapse

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

VICTORIA, British Columbia -- Canada's west coast salmon industry is in danger of collapse, according to a report released by Fisheries and Oceans Minister Geoff Regan.

At a dockside news conference viewed by owners and crew members from nearby fishing boats, Regan said Wednesday the commercial, recreational and Indian sectors need a major overhaul to survive.

"Low market prices, shifting abundance, conservation constraints and new harvest restrictions to protect endangered species have eroded profitability," he said. "The report warns that these problems have collectively brought the commercial salmon industry to the brink of bankruptcy."

2. Some Restrictions Should Be In Order
If the Canadian commercial salmon fishing industry collapses, it would probably be a good idea to restrict the sorts of salmon fishing that would be allowed. That means no foreign trawlers in Canadian waters, no long lines, and just let locals and Native Americans do subsistence fishing. Let the stocks build up again after decades of over-harvesting.

when I visited there on the blue and the black roads and talked to many of the fishermen there, the fishing industry is gone caput.

Many have simply sold their boats and have given up.
