4. Rumsfeld & Rice should be fired. But...Isn't keeping them good for Kerry?
Bush keeps all those people who are responsible for the mess we are in and is defending them.

Bush would look stronger if he'd clean up house and fire Rice and Rummy. Keeping them in a position of power will just result in him having to deal with more and more attacks from not only Dems but also moderate Repukes.

11. He can't fire anybody on his own, he is just a front man
That would be impossible for George W. Bush to get rid most any of these key PNACers folks. It would be like a normal person going to their neighborhood grocery store to shop for this weeks staples while they are flashing their birthday suit (BUTT NAKED)

Or is Wolfie tied so closely to the failed war strategy that even the pub senators would oppose him?

27. Well
that would be the product of spiteful arrogance but the logical pick, if they are capable of it is some front man with a stellar war record who will be dumped after November for the real vengeful choice.

That stellar replacement will of course in one way or another be a stooge and even more likely out of the loop except when they need to initiate him into shared culpability so he can be controlled. Or Powelled.

16. Nope, I don't believe him
Listening to Scotty's press briefing today I became convinced that Rummy is history. They're going to have him fall on his sword for the BFEE. The Prez has deniability in saying Rummy "never told him" and Scotty seemed to play that angle up. I'm sure Rummy'll be gone.

But do any of these guys ever really "go away"???

Red Cross Says It Urged U.S. to Act on Iraq Prison Abuse

...No Action from the WH? Why didn't they go Public?..

GENEVA, May 6 — Staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross were fully aware of the full spectrum of abuses of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers at the Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad and had repeatedly urged the United States to take corrective action, a spokesman for the humanitarian organization said today.

21. Tempted to say "So long, Don!"
But Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo has a pretty good analysis of why the Bushistas would like to avoid cashiering Rumsfeld, mostly having to do with the November election, inconvenient questions about why the civilian oversight of the military hasn't been a little more efficient, and what's going to be done to change things so it doesn't happen again.

The appointment and confirmation process for a new Defense Secretary could easily drag the issue out for several months, and the Bush administration has other things it would like to be doing with its time. Marshall points out, though, that Rumsfeld may not have the defenders necessary to bring the current shitstorm into equilibrium, and quiet the voices calling for his head.

Bush is going to have to make a decision (which he hates to do), and if he keeps Rumsfeld on, he's going to have to give come clear and cogent reasons for doing so (which he REALLY hates to do).

This would be almost enjoyable if it weren't for the subject matter, the torture and the dead bodies. But that may be a necessary cost of getting rid of this corrupt administration.

25. Took the words right out my mouth
The surest predictor I know of anything with this administration is the opposite of what they say.

This is a nice setup, however. Now Rummy can step down "because of pressure from a public badly misinformed and lathered up by the librul press." The Fierce Warrior Chieftain gets to retain his mantle of a guy who follows his path no matter what ("I stand by my man. I give him two arms to cling to.") and Rummy retires to a life of fat bucks and glory as a martyr to the cause.
