2. According to a letter-to-the-editor in our paper,
they are dying there so that we don't have to die here. The writer said, "They are fighting for your freedom over there so that you can have a free life here".

3. Man
They are fighting for your freedom over there so that you can have a free life here.

It's this kind of idiotic wingnut asshattery that makes me worried about how much longer the republic can hold together.

10. A good point. However, you could also say...
...that it is through such lies that the Republic *is* held together.

The mass lie--that we are in Iraq to liberate it--is what keeps the troops from going insane or killing their leaders. It's what keeps the military families from facing the abyss. And it's what keeps the average citizen from facing, every second of his or her day, that he or she is a citizen of an empire that ravages the globe.

These lies are essential to allowing us to live with the evil committed in our names.

The question is: Are there enough people who wish to face the truth? And if so, then what?

:wtf:

So why is my freedom being fought for in Iraq? How does that work exactly? For every Iraqi toddler that gets blown away in their living room, somehow I become more free, another part of the Bill of Rights suddenly applies to me?

5. I called it IRAQ-NAM in FEB 2003
It is the newest represented commonwealth, of the wealthiest nation in the Western Hemisphere,
the Consolidated Corporate States of North Amerika N.A. It may become the 53rd State of this
powerful Union

IRAQ-NAM, is a ruthless, vicious place that asks No Quarter and Gives None.

It is ruled by Viceroy Pontius Bremer appointed by Cheney Caesar, in the year of Our Lord Two
thousand Three A. D.

Death here rides a Pale Horse.

Death claims in no particular order, the Innocent, the Guilty, the Unlucky and the Careless.

4. On Newsnight, a couple of nights ago, Aaron Brown said that 40,000
...patients have been evacuated out of Iraq. And I remember reading an article saying that personnel at Walter Reed have treated more than 10,000 injured soldiers since the start of the invasion. But the Pentagon's official injury count is something like 4,000.

With all of the smoke and mirrors regarding the injured, I have to wonder what the death toll really is.

Here's the Newsnight transcript: http://www.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0405/05/asb.00.html

7. Tip of the iceberg
Total coalition deaths was at 826 a couple of weaks ago. Just amongst US forces, there have been over 4,000 wounded. On the Iraqi side, somewhere between 4,895 and 6,300 military were killed, 5,103 more wounded, and Iraqi civilian deaths are estimated at approximately 10,000. I'm sure the victims of 9/11 will rest easier knowing that, for every one of them who died on 9/11, ten others have died for their sake. Personally, even if I had been among those who died on 9/11, I'm not sure I'd appreciate my karma being burdened with that kind of bloodbath.
