Bush's cabinet in disarray
Published: May 8 2004 5:00 | Last Updated: May 8 2004 5:00

As a former co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, President George W. Bush needs no lessons in the value of team discipline. He must therefore be mortified by the breakdown in collective discipline at the highest levels of his administration.

Whatever their differences in private, senior cabinet members have largely held their tongues in public. The outward semblance of unity has now fractured, exacerbated by the chaos in Iraq and the controversy over the role of the US military in the torture and humiliation of Iraqi prisoners.

Mutual recrimination and the rewriting of history are pervasive. Thus we read in Bob Woodward's peep-hole account of the path to war that Colin Powell, secretary of state, likens neoconservatives at the department of defence to a Gestapo cell. This week, in GQ magazine, a senior Powell aide speaks of Paul Wolfowitz, the leading Pentagon hawk, in the same breath as Lenin. The neo-cons' retort that the department of state should be renamed the department of nice is almost shockingly polite by comparison.

Tensions between the Pentagon and state department are not new. The present divisions are more reminiscent of the Reagan administration when George Schultz and Caspar Weinberger fought almost daily over policy towards the Soviet Union. Then as now, the warring camps were pushing competing visions of American power.

1. God willing, in a year from now they'll all be gone.
We'll have a new president...a new administration.

But, it will take years to recover from this fucking mess!

Wish it were so, but there are plenty of Conservative think-tanks and lobbying firms to suck up these guys no matter how bad it gets.

9. One can only hope, Nadin.
I was thinking about this issue all day today, as I was trying to get some work done at the office. It was really tough.

I thought, isn't it amazing how quickly these thugs were able to get into the White House and run it into the ground. Not only have they shit all over Washington, but they took their messes all over the world and made it one big toilet.

Actually, I see opportunity. When things are this weird, art thrives. In fact, I have a working short story going called "Bush in Vietnam." Fiction, mind you.

It puts Bu$h in RVN as a fuck-up fighter pilot, on my wing (Chic Alors!) over Laos and the Ho Chi Mihn Trail. Again, a work-in-progress. Might work, might not.

And well clear of his pull out. I wonder if he was as shitty as a pilot, as he is as a President?

On the other hand maybe we can put him in with a load of snake and nape at 500' AGL over Tchepone. In Steel Tiger, he would know what the asshole pucker factor of a quad ZSU-23-4 searching for him was.

But alas a fantasy--he is and was THE COWARDLY CHIMPANZEE.

30. I remember when we called in napalm ...
Edited on Sat May-08-04 08:40 AM by TahitiNut
... at early dawn February 23/24, 1969 just south of Long Binh's south perimeter to deal with an augmented batallion of NVA that had retrenched. I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere even close to where I was if the DimSon was doing any of those passes. He'd have wiped out all of Long Binh and half of Bien Hoa before crashing in some village.

On edit: LOL! Yup... it was "snake and nape" (it's been a loooong time since I heard that). I remember being chilled to the bone by the display. I just couldn't imagine the kind of hell that ridge line must've been. The gooey flames surrounding the explosions of bombs and bomblets was an inferno I'd never imagined. (Gawd!)

The picture on page one is of the KIA body of 1LT Morris Alfred "Butch" Simpson being carried into the hospital at Khe Sanh. The guy between the body and the Medivac helicopter is Malcolm "Mac" W Jones, Jr. Butch took a single AK-47 round in the head, his crew chief flew the aircraft back to Khe Sahn, Feb 28, 1971. Butch was a Scout Pilot from Richlands Hills, Tx. Butch and Mac were both with C Troop, 2/17 Cavalry Squadron.

34. But in Laos, man, they hunt for you.
The following excerpt from Newsweek, 15 March 1971, was more objective than most at the time:

To the modern American cavalryman of the air, the plunge into Laos has been something like an old-time charge on horseback: admirably heroic, stunningly effective-and terribly costly. For four weeks now, American helicopter pilots have flown through some of the heaviest flak in the history of the Indochinese war. One-day alone last week, the Army admitted to losing ten aircraft to the unexpectedly heavy North Vietnamese ground fire, and there were reports from the field that the actual losses had been much worse. As a result, the customary bravado of the American chopper pilot was beginning to wear a bit thin. "Two weeks ago," said one gunship skipper, "I couldn't have told you how much time I had left to serve in Vietnam. Now I know that I've got 66 days to go, and I'm counting every one." Another flier added anxiously: "The roles are reversed over there. In Vietnam, you have to hunt for the enemy. But in Laos, man, they hunt for you.

There was no better place to serve than in A/101, and I think the Comancheros of today feel the same way. When guys risk their lives to come after you, you know what it means to be in a "Band of Brothers".

22. from the start
the white house bunch were and are a freeking bunch of arrogant, underinformed and stupid amateurs. How can we ever be forgiven for the mess we've created not only in Iraq but in the world? Bush co., must be brought to justice one way or another. Can't see how the world can let them off scot free if and when Bush gets thrown out of the white house. Hitler at least had the "decency" to kill himself when he saw that the walls were closing in, but it would be too much to expect Shrub, the Dick, Wolfie, Condi , Rummy and Rove to fall on their swords.
