Ebert to undergo cancer radiation therapy
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 05:19 PM by Crisco
We need to send out good vibes for one of the good guys:

Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert, who has battled back from two cancer surgeries in the last two years, will undergo radiation treatments for a malignant tumor on the salivary gland.

...

"P.S. By the way, my thyroid cancer has been completely vanquished."

Salivary gland? Too much popcorn? Anyway, it's his second bout with this gland.

on edit:

sorry forgot to link. It's in today's Sun-Times (http://suntimes.com).

4. What is it with these guys and cancer?
I saw him on TV a couple of weeks ago and he had trouble moving one side of his face. It looked like he had some type of facial nerve paralysis; now I know why.

God bless him. I don't always agree with his movie reviews (I always agreed with Gene Siskel more, and I was so saddened by his death), but Roger and I see eye-to-eye when it comes to politics. He's written some great political essays.

I hope everything goes okay and wish him good health.

10. I think so too....
... and I always check his reviews before I see a movie.

I don't *always* agree, he can be a bit of a fuddy duddy - sometimes a movie can just be *fun* and that is enough. But I love the insights he generally has as to the story and its intentions and successes.

May he Get Well Soon!

18. When Siskel was still alive,
their partnership was perfect, because Siskel would sometimes alert me to films that were fun, but Ebert would dismiss essentially because they were lightweight. That was one of the reasons they made such an awesome pair. I usually found myself agreeing more with Ebert, but between the two of them, I rarely missed a movie I enjoyed. At one point, before I gave up TV, I used to argue with some friends of mine that the S & E show and Seinfeld were the only consistently watchable things on TV. I still think I was right.

I hope he makes it. Too many good people have passed on recently.

11. Parotoid gland, maybe
My mother had this. The surgeon removed the gland. Many nerve fibers ran through it, and he said it was like separating out the tiny root hairs of a plant from the dirt. One side of my mother's face, eye and mouth, were droopy but returned to normal after 6 months. But about 5 years later the cancer spread to her brain, and despite radiation, she died.

13. Someone once observed here...
...that maybe Ebert knows his days are numbered, hence the increase in his biting attacks against the Bush regime. Hey, I guess if you're going out, you may as well go out swinging, though I do wish him good health and a safe recovery.
