82 percent of Iraqis oppose U.S. occupation
Edited on Thu May-13-04 08:38 AM by NewYorkerfromMass
"Four out of five Iraqis report holding a negative view of the U.S. occupation authority and of coalition forces, according to a new poll conducted for the occupation authority. In the poll, 80 percent of Iraqis surveyed reported a lack of confidence in the Coalition Provisional Authority, and 82 percent said they disapprove of the United States and allied militaries in Iraq.

Although comparative numbers from previous polls are not available, "generally speaking, the trend is downward," said Donald Hamilton, a senior counselor to civilian administrator L. Paul Bremer. The occupation authority has been commissioning such surveys in Iraq since late last year, he said. This one was taken in Baghdad and several other Iraqi cities in late March and early last month, before the surge in anti-coalition violence and the detainee-abuse scandal.

The findings appeared consistent with a poll taken about the same time by USA Today, CNN and Gallup, which found that 57 percent of Iraqis wanted foreign troops to leave immediately.

The new poll, which has not been released publicly, is a concern among occupation authority officials and in Washington, D.C., because the data provide evidence that the U.S. effort is not winning over Iraqi public opinion....."

3. What is taking so long?
As difficult as it may sound, I would hope someone would advocate a complete and absolute immediate withdrawal. And simply let the chips fall where they may.

The country might descend into chaos, but wouldn't it be better if they solved their own problems? Obviously we're not solving the problem.

And I know we are the ones that started it, but to stay there seems to be making it worse.

5. "Descend into chaos?"
From this point, it would have to ascend into chaos.

:-)

I suspect they will sort it out themselves, as well they should. So many people in this country forget its NOT OURS TO FIX.

6. Wouldn't that be nice if it was Kerry?
But I know he has to play Bush-lite for the meantime. Well, anyway that's what I'm told.

If I hear that cliche "can't cut and run" one more time I'm gonna scream. We seemed to survive our own damn civil war, why can't they be left to solve their own problems? It is condescending.

I don't see why it is better for Iraqi's to die at the hands of our military or "possibly" die in a "possible" civil war.

Oh, and welcome to DU Greatscott. :hi:
