Hillary Clinton has sweet revenge

Tucker Carlson loses boast

By Sean Loughlin
CNN Washington Bureau
Wednesday, July 9, 2003 Posted: 6:50 PM EDT (2250 GMT)

Carlson cuts into the cake as Clinton and Begala look on.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Payback is rarely so sweet.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-New York, helped CNN Crossfire Host Tucker Carlson eat his words Wednesday, following the news that sales of her memoir "Living History" had exceeded 1 million copies.

Carlson, the conservative half of the political talk show, had repeatedly claimed on air that Clinton's book would never sell that many copies, vowing to eat his shoes if it did.

"I will in fact eat my shoes because I'm a man of my word," he proclaimed in one segment.

2. What an appearance by Hillary!
It reminded me of when Janet Reno burst onto the stage at SNL. I cheered both times! It was quite magnanimous of Hillary to make the appearance and serve up that shoe shaped cake. Magnanimous is a word that you will NEVER hear spoken in reference to a Republican.

3. Very amusing...
I was very surprised when Hillary came out with that shoe cake. She should have gotten a rotten shoe from the garbabe dump and made Tucker eat that instead.

It just goes to show how much class and dignity Hillary has. She turned an uncomfortable situation for an enemy into a comforting one. Wasn't it Jesus, at "The Sermon on the Mount,' who said, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you..."? I think Hillary displayed that motto splendidly on "Crossfire."

5. I'm glad she did it this way.
Much more style and class this way. Showing a great sense of humor about the whole silly thing, and presents a fabulous image. Three cheers for the Senator.

7. I think Hillary converted a lot of people today with her great
appearance. They now see what a gracious lady she really is.

4. I just seen the replay on CNN...
That is one classy broad: Hillary. Nice cake too! Tucker should be so "dogged" by the vast left-wing conspiracy what?

8. I saw the whole episode earlier,
and it was a blast. Everyone is right about Hillary, she showed class showing up offering Tucker the chocolate shoe. All of these republicans that hate her has got to admit that was a good episode worth watching today on Crossfire.

Hey, I just thought of something. From now on I will pretend to be a republican that hate the Clinton's and I will join Fox TV and say that big dog Clinton will never sell over a million books. That way I'll have a chance to meet him as he make me eat my words!

9. I can NOT believe how naive people are
This was a total ratings BS-athon for CNN. Hillary was obviously in on it, and for that I have yet another reason to call her a sell out. It is amazing how well people can be taken in.

11. Of course Ms. Clinton was in on it!
I do not think Tucker was. I thought for a minute he was gonna hug her.

Either way it was a class act.

21. oh come on
even if she was in on it, which is doubtful, a joke doesn't make you a sell out.

17. Typical rabid conservative
They make it seem personal and hostile because it fires up their base. Then when in the actual prescence of the object of their hostility...

18. Two points
1) The audience by 2 to 1 margin still wanted Tucker to eat his shoe

2) The 1 million was done in 4 weeks time... faster than expected

19. I still want to see him eat an actual shoe..
Yeah, it was cute. Yeah, Hillary pulled it off. I even liked the teasers that the CNN anchor/talking head kept throwing in during the hour or so before Crossfire started--the teasers had a bit of an nasty little screw-you Tucker edge which was nice. But I won't be happy until I see that smarmy little lying bowtie-wearing worm actually choke on some really nasty street-seasoned shoe leather. Can we look forward to that for tomorrow? What can we tell Tucker to eat when she sells 2 million?

23. Hillary
Hillary Clinton handled herself with class and eloquence.
Personally, I would have had him chomp on a 20 year old bowling shoe after it was used by someone with a severe athletes foot problem.

20. Hillary still took a marvelous swipe at the Bow-Tie Boy...
She autographed and gave Tucker a copy of her book, and in it it said something to the effect that "Tucker you are number one (millionth) in my book!" Oh how sweet it is. Snarf, snarf.

Little twit didn't even deserve that much consideration.

22. When he called her a leftist and she told him he was wrong
because she was centrist he said something like "I'm wrong sometimes and she said your wrong alot" it was great Crossfire, she displayed alot of class and showed tremendous goodwill, this segment will probably be useful in the future. Good for her.
