Secret US jails hold 10,000
Secret US jails hold 10,000

13.05.2004
By ANDREW BUNCOMBE and KIM SENGUPTA

WASHINGTON - Almost 10,000 prisoners from President George W. Bush's so-called war on terror are being held around the world in secretive American-run jails and interrogation centres similar to the notorious Abu Ghraib Prison.

Some of these detention centres are so sensitive that even the most senior members of the United States Congress have no idea where they are.

<snip>

Officials say prisoners range from those accused of petty crimes to detainees believed to be involved in attacks on US forces, though it is increasingly clear that many hundreds are simply Iraqi civilians swept up in raids by US and British soldiers.

Military and diplomatic sources say a number of detainees were taken to Iraq from Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, the US military still holds 300 or more prisoners at Bagram, north of Kabul, and at facilities in Kandahar, Jalalabad and Asadabad.

The CIA, meanwhile, runs an interrogation centre in Kabul that is known by special forces and others simply as "The Pit".

36.  2,019,234 Americans in Prisons
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2003/apr2003/pris-a10.shtml

The Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics’ report—“Prison and Jail Inmates at Midyear 2002”—shows that as of midyear 2002 a record 2,019,234 prisoners were incarcerated in American state and federal facilities.

The US has a higher percentage of its citizenry in prison than any other country in history, and accounts for an astonishing 25 percent of the world’s prison population.

4. One still remembers the indignant news items and editorials
in American newspapers about the lack of due process and the disappearance of prisoners in the Soviet Union and the similar treatment meted out to prisoners in Communist China. This news item confirms the old saying: Pick your enemies carefully because they are the ones you are going to resemeble the most.

14. How many prison camps?
"It is impossible to know for sure because the Pentagon refuses to provide complete information." It estimated that up to 90 per cent of the prisoners had been "arrested by mistake".

After all, how do you think the US military learn;t all the techniques they teach at the School Of the Americas?

"Torture" and "US military" are two phrases that have been linked for decades.

6. many Guantanamos
from Democracy NOW! interview with Seymour Hersch who exposed the Abu Ghraib torture:

<clips>

...And anyway there is a separate prison for the hard cases; that we're not talking about. They weren't at Abu Ghraib. They were at other places. And so what you were doing is you were trying to find the 5,000 magic guys, and Miller recommended, do so, that you put the military intelligence people last fall in charge of the prisons.

And Ricardo Sanchez -- all of this is I write in this article, promulgated an order, they call it a FRAGO, frag operation order, promulgated an order last November 19 putting military intelligence in charge of all the prisons. And that meant that the interrogators -- literally that meant you were going to end up with Guantanamos all over the place. Cause whole function of the prison system was getting information.

9. 90 per cent of the prisoners had been "arrested by mistake"?
"Iraq has become a holding pen for America's prisoners from 21 countries, according to a report from the international campaign group Human Rights Watch."

"The US military is keeping prisoners at 10 centres, most of which were used by Saddam Hussein's regime. The total in January was 8968, and is thought to have increased."

"Prisoners are being held from, among other countries, Algeria, Egypt, India, Iran, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and Yemen."

Why do I have the feeling the military training used overseas, is the precursor, to what is in store for us, when Bush, at his sole discretion, labels us enemy combatants? Thats what it's coming down to, in case anyone isn't paying attention. If the discovery of prisoner abuse hadn't been made public, these same soldiers are intended to be our future jailers.

The Iraqis, are the pilot program.

13. They already have a plan to suspend the Constitution
Gen Tommy Franks said that if there is a terror attack like a dirty bomb, the the government will have to suspend the constitution and declare marshal law.

My nightmare scenario is that Bush falls so far behind in the polling that they make such a terror attack happen and declare marshal law, suspend the election and the Constitution and begin to throw anyone who complains into prison. The draft will be in place and we will turn children against their parents. See how easy it was to get the troops to abuse the prisoners in Iraq. I also think there is a plan to replace Congress in a very short time. That would give them complete control for ever.

I was amazed at how fast we had the patriot act ready and voted into law and the large overwhelming vote for the IWR and the willingness to buy all the excuses for the war.

Yes Virgina it could happen.

20. Then we will have to act against illegal martial law
by any means available. Everyone should consider watching the movie "Red Dawn" and consider that the occupier will be the United States instead of USSR and Cuba.

It may be necessary to put together a plan to counter martial law and take back our country. That means the means to communicate with true Americans and be able to identify friend from foe. I would hate to see it come to that but if does then we have to defend our country.

“To do evil a human being must first of all believe that what he's doing is good... Ideology - that is what gives evildoing its long-sought justification and gives the evildoer the necessary steadfastness and determination. That is the social theory which helps to make his acts seem good instead of bad in his own and others' eyes, so that he won't hear reproaches and curses but will receive praise and honors.”

29. Absolutely Disgusting
So, it has come to this? Does anybody think that changing the CIC is going to put a stop to all of this? Does Kerry have the ability to do so? Does he even have the will to do so?

Dismantling the prisons would be a good first step but in order to do so Kerry would have to have a detention center somewhere that is open to monitoring from outside observers. Could that happen?

The Ethics Of Using Medical Data From Nazi Experiments
Baruch C. Cohen1

1. INTRODUCTION

Following World War II, leading Nazi doctors were brought to justice before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. Twenty doctors were charged with War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. The Nuremberg trial of the doctors revealed evidence of sadistic human experiments conducted at the Dachau, Auschwitz, Buchenwald and Sachsenhausen concentration camps.

Since the Nuremberg trials, our society has had to confront the reality that the Nazi doctors were guilty of premeditated murder masqueraded as research. Professional modern medicine has had little difficulty condemning the Nazi doctors as evil men. But what is being said of the continued use of the Nazi doctors' medical research? Many scholars are now discovering in reputable medical literature multiple references to Nazi experiments, or republished works of former SS doctors. These studies and references frequently bear no disclaimer as to how the data was obtained. In recent years several scientists who have sought to use the Nazi research have attracted and stirred widespread soul-searching about the social responsibility and potential abuses of science.

These incidents prompt a number of questions for the scientific community. Is it ever appropriate to use data as morally repugnant as that which was extracted from victims of Nazism? If so, under what circumstances?
