N.C. Republicans expel House co-speaker

Say Morgan is cooperating with Democrats

GREENSBORO - N.C. Republicans expelled state House Co-Speaker Richard Morgan from the party's executive committee Sunday, a savored payback from his GOP foes in the General Assembly.

The political banishment turned the state Republican convention, normally an exercise in unity, into an illumination of the party's painful split.

N.C. Rep. John Rhodes, a Mecklenburg Republican and sharp critic of Morgan, high-fived a Wake County delegate after the overwhelming vote against Morgan, the highest-ranking Republican state lawmaker. Morgan forged a ruling coalition among Democrats and a few Republicans in the House last year.

"This guy is supporting a Democratic governor's policies," Rhodes said. "The Republican Party has spoken, and they've disowned him."

Kenny Kidd, Randolph County party chairman, handed in his resignation from the executive committee after voting in support of Morgan

I live in Ga. and don't follow NC politics much, but I also heard a caller on C-span this morning express how unhappy he was with the new Senator Dole. If Kerry choses Edwards for VP, could we win NC?

So, I wouldn't wait for them to honestly label themselves.
