Bowles turns tables on man he hopes to replace
Uses joint appearance to boost John Edwards as Kerry running mate

RALEIGH - John Edwards' stump speech and fund-raising appearance Sunday were supposed to be all about Erskine Bowles, the fellow Democrat running for his U.S. Senate seat.
But Bowles took the opportunity to point out Edwards is running for something as well.
"If John Kerry does not put him on the national ticket, he's absolutely nuts," Bowles said of Edwards to more than 50 supporters.
Edwards, a potential vice presidential nominee and virtual rock star among Democratic loyalists, took center stage in an appearance at Bowles' campaign headquarters, shaking hands with supporters while Bowles smiled from behind the podium.
Since giving up his presidential campaign, Edwards has given speeches across the country to help Democrats in their effort to win back the Republican-controlled Senate. Sunday's appearance was his first for Bowles.
