Iraq Official Chides Bush on Prison Plan (a waste of resources)

Wednesday May 26, 2004 4:01 PM

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The head of Iraq's Governing Council said Wednesday that President Bush's idea of demolishing the notorious Abu Ghraib prison was a waste of resources.

``We must not be sentimental,'' Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer told reporters. ``Torture has taken place in every vault in Iraq. As the Governing Council, we do not agree with demolishing it and the matter will be left for the transitional government'' which takes office June 30.

He called the idea of destroying the prison ``a waste of resources.'' <snip>

On Tuesday, Ahmed Hassan al-Uqaili, deputy chief of the Human Rights Organization in Iraq, dismissed Bush's promise as a Republican ploy ``to win the (presidential) election in the United States.'' <snip>

3. Heh. Shrub gets bitch-slapped by the head of the Iraq GC. How low can he
go? Little Scotty is going to be tap dancing and spinning so hard he may throw up on Karl Rove.

5. they should make a museum with tours, like at Dachau
I went to the Dachau camp in Germany, walked through the gas chambers, it brings a cold chill down your spine. They explain the indignity and brutality that they used to maintain power. As should Abu Graib be used to teach Iraqis how not to run a government and how NOT to treat each other!

6. The man is being entirely sensible
As are other Iraqis. I saw one article in which an Iraqi is quoted as saying: "It is not the building itself, but how people use it."

Of course. Every child knows this. Not Bush.

Or rather, once again the Bushies attempt to substitute symbolic gestures for substantive action. That may go over well in the land of make believe known as the United States, but the Iraqi people need action, not more empty symbols. I think thy'll only get that action if the lying thieves in the administrtion pull everyone out of Iraq, like, yesterday, motherfuckers.

8. Not only that, but the wasteful tax dollars
that would have to be spent on building a new one - according to the idiot Bush.
