Kerry speaks on Seattle waterfront

By Times staff and wire services

SEATTLE — Thousands of John Kerry well-wishers braved a rainy morning at the Seattle waterfront this morning to see the Democratic presidential candidate blame the Bush Administration's foreign policy and energy policy for record-high gas prices.
"There's no possible way for America to drill its way out of this predicament," said Kerry, who called for more federally funded energy research. "We have to invent our way out of this predicament, and we need a president who understands this.

"As long as we're dependent on oil from other nations … we are not masters of our own destiny, we are not independent, we are not free." he said.

Kerry, in Seattle for two days, attacked President Bush for what he called "the most arrogant, inept foreign policy in the history of our nation," and promised that if he were elected, "no young American in uniform will ever be held hostage to America's dependence upon oil in the Middle East."

Roger Newman, 52, from Redmond, and his daughter Jennifer, 20, a student at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, were braving the rain at Pier 62 to see Kerry.

4. except for potential Nader voters
Rove somehow thinks Washington state is up for grabs this time around, and they plan to spend gobs of money out here.

I don't think we can rest assuming that Seattle will carry the state for Kerry this fall.

6. Trotting out that tired, old --
-- "foreign leaders" script again. Just goes to show how desperate they are.

Yep, even with a lot of Dean/Kucinich supporters here in the upper left-hand, Kerry should do just fine. The Nader factor in WA State isn't going to be nearly as significant as it was in 2000, since people on the West side of the Cascades at least are going to come out in droves to help bury shrub in the polls this time around.

7. I'm back and soaking wet, but happy
It was nice to be there, and if anyone tells you the crowd was only 2000, that's untrue.

8. Not the greatest day to be on the Seattle waterfront
(I hope everyone had their Gore-Tek and fleece handy) but it sounds like a great speech - I'm sorry I missed it! I had a very important phone call this afternoon.:hi:
