AP - LONDON - Far from being crippled by the U.S.-led war on terror, al-Qaida has more than 18,000 potential terrorists scattered around the world and the war in Iraq (news - web sites) is swelling its ranks, a report said Tuesday.http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040526/ap_on_re_mi_ea/al_qaida&cid=540&ncid=716Of course, we at DU predicted this many months ago, as the obvious result of *'s unilateral attack on Iraq society and culture that was sure to result from his attempt to
Run Saddam down, dead or alive.
What I want to know, is how anyone could expect to defend a nation like ours from any group of enemies who are willing to die to defeat us and use terrorism as a strategy. We are a large, soft and vulnerable target that's almost impossible to defend from those types of attacks - as I believe we'll soon be reminded.
It seems we are either headed for the Apocalypse that the "fundies" hope for - or we will have to become a truly free and democratic nation that completely separates religion from public policy - both domestically and abroad - and treats other nations and cultures with true respect.
I think we're at that crossroads now. If any of us come through this alive we'll be able to tell our grandkids true stories that will be far more exciting than Tolkein's - and with a story line that reveals real human nature at it's best and at it worst.
So take notes while you duck the artillery. We'll need to get this right if we expect to prevent it from ever happening again.
