At Least 5 More G.I.'s Are Killed in Iraq
Headline on NYT home web page says 6.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/01/international/middleeast/01IRAQ.html?pagewanted=print&position=

At least five American soldiers died in Iraq during a 24-hour period that began Sunday, two of them fighting insurgents in the holy city of Kufa during the unraveling of a cease-fire agreement with a rebel Shiite cleric, military officials said Monday.

The two soldiers were the first to be reported killed in combat in the adjoining southern cities of Najaf and Kufa since the First Armored Division began operations there to put pressure on the cleric, Moktada al-Sadr, to disarm his militia. At least 808 American troops have died since the war began in March 2003.

The American-appointed governor of Najaf said Monday that prominent Shiite political and religious leaders had persuaded Mr. Sadr to agree to a new truce. Under the proposal, Mr. Sadr's militia would put away its weapons in exchange for the Americans' halting patrols for 48 hours. But American commanders had not approved the deal as of late Monday.

Violence in the country continued Monday afternoon as a car bomb exploded on a busy commercial and residential street near the fortified American headquarters in Baghdad, killing at least four Iraqi civilians and wounding at least 25 people, military officials and witnesses said.

3. These were all accounted for earlier
I have one more, for 6 total since Sunday, per Reuters. To wit:

30-May 4
1 - 1AD killed in small-arms fire, Kufa;
1 - 1AD killed when RPG hits tank, Kufa;
1 - 1AD, killed in IED attack, south of Baghdad;
1 - Task Force Olympia (2ID) died of wounds received May 29, location unspecified.

31-May 2
2 - unit unnamed, killed in IED attack, south of Baghdad

(The NYT article only has one listed for May 31).

The most telling part of the article is clear, if (literally) on its margins:

An Iraqi employee of The New York Times contributed reporting from Najaf for this article.

The NY Times won't even send their person to Najaf...too dangerous.

5. The 1AD was one of the divisions extended four months
With fighting between Coalition forces and the Iraqis increasing, looks like there's a good chance units like the 1AD, who have already been deployed for over a year, will continue to be extended. The 3,000 plus US troops from Korea aren't going to be enough to calm this storm.

6. The media is barely reporting these deaths anymore!
Yahoo main page doesn't mention them at all.. just some puffery about Bush speaking.. This is amazing how they're hiding the deaths now.. They give their lives for our country and they're hidden away for political reasons. On MEMORIAL DAY of all days!

9. I was mentioning this last week in GD
Prior to May I'd hear it in the morning when I turned on my local news radio while showering, or on CNN while dressing. Most days now I have to click on Lunaville to check the casualities. And it's not like they're less. Lunaville has May as 78 KIAs. 3rd highest month.

13. It's ignored unless there is
something that causes a large number of deaths. At first, there were one or two deaths a day, now, it's up to three or four per day. There's probably a number of factors, not on the least our military is getting tired, they and their equipment are wearing out. They're overextended, and there is no hope of replacement, I don't know who they plan on putting in the 1st. ad's place.
It's all so sad and needless.

8. Iraqi-US gulf widens, clashes continue - TT
Two US soldiers and more than a dozen Iraqi militiamen were killed in skirmishes overnight around the Shiite holy city of Najaf, the fourth day of clashes since militia leader Moqtada al-Sadr offered a truce.

Iraqi leaders sharply criticized US officials for blocking their choice of a president to succeed former president Saddam Hussein when the US occupation authority is wound up in a month's time.

The gulf between US and Iraqi preferences was so wide that US officials asked to postpone talks by a day until today.
