Michael Moore covets July 4th fireworks (distribution deal close)
Michael Moore is close to a deal to secure a mid-summer theatricaltheatrical distribution for his Palme d'Or-winning documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11."

But the deal was still unresolved on Monday, as potential distribs mulled the logistics of what is likely to be a highly unconventional wide release campaign at the height of the blockbuster season.

Sources close to the talks said Moore was eyeing a June 25 or July 2 theatrical release date, with a home-video release in October.

Sources close to the talks said Lions GateLions Gate Films (which handled "Dogma""Dogma") was the front-runner for U.S. theatrical rights, but on Monday there were still offers on the table from several other distribs.

They are talking about having the movie in theaters in three or four weeks and they still don't have a distributor? It sounds crazy!

He was a Nader supporter in 2000. He is a rich fat guy.(ie.Rush Limbaugh)
His rhetoric is so extreme, he hurts us more than he helps us.

3. Agree on 2 counts, Disagree on 3 Counts with your comments re. Moore
Agree:

1) Yes, he was a Nader Supporter in 2000 - so were a lot of folks on the DU; Note: He doesn't support him now in 2004.

2)Yes, he is a rich fat guy. Note: So what - his weight should be no issue (heck, most of America is overweight) and so he's rich - so are other dems, doesn't mean that they don't care about their country and put their money where their mouth is. Being rich ain't no crime, its what you do with your time and money that can be - and Mike Moore certainly does a lot for his fellow americans and country.

Disagree:

1) No, he ain't no Rush Limbaugh - the mere comparison of Mike Moore to him is well, like comparing Bush to Ghandi.

2) No, his rhetoric is not "extreme" - certainly no more "extreme" than the puke that is forced upon us daily by Tom Delay or others in the Repuke party. I'd say that Mike Moore is honest and takes a really straight no punches barred look at real issues...that isn't "extreme" - its honest.

3) No, Mike Moore doesn't "hurt us more than help us" - Have you seen Roger & Me or Bowling for Columbine? Have you ever read any of his books? I can only say that Mike Moore gives people thought-provoking images and information for people to digest and contemplate and his 9/11 Fahrenheit is going to do just that - those that are committed to Regime change in this country will just be strengthened in their resolve and people who are moderates or need more information and see this movie will be moved away from supporting Bush. How can any of this hurt us? I seriously doubt someone who was going to vote for Kerry or a Moderate who is unsure is going to see this movie and go "I better go vote for Bush - that Mike Moore guy is too extreme for me"...

7. You make some good points, but...
Moore's little diatribe at the Oscars forever took him out of the mainsteam for swing voters.
Unelected, knew about 9/11,....this shit doesn't float with swing voters. It's like RW nutbags claiming Clinton murdered Vince Foster while running drugs out of Mena Arkansas.
He may firm up the base, but he isn't bringing any new members to the family.

Whether it is extreme, hard, awful, or some other adjective is purely in the eye of the beholder, or subject of that truth.

The Truth just "is".

26. I have to add to this
Mike Moore also gets the word out. His books and movies are very popular and help get information to people who might not have heard or seen it else where.

He has done more to educate the populace on what is going on within the Bush Admin than mainstream media.

4. Hmm...
Did the Passion of the Christ hurt the fundamentalist cause? No, they were out giving free tickets to any fool who wanted to see the movie. Is there such an equivalent to our cause, no we are a bunch of cheapskates when it comes to such things. The way I see it, we ought to be giving out free tickets to this movie, but that will never happen.

28. ooooooo...
I like it! We should be out giving free tickets to this one, especially during the lead up to the election. Moore says he wants as many American's possible to see his movie before November. Saying he will go to extraordinary lengths to do it. www.michaelmoore.com

If the movie doesn't get distribution before November, this movie will have a great screener bootleg copy all over the internet and personally I wont be surprised if Moore ends up behind it getting there.

5. A lot of us voted Green in 2K
And I think we can be forgiven for it, being that most of us knew nothing about what it would be like to have a right-wing fanatic with a severely eroded mental faculties in the White House with a pet Stepford Congress serving his every whim.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being rich and fat - as long as you aren't "Limbic Rush". One's body weight does not seem to be an intelligent concern to me.

Speaking of Rush, my only - my ONLY - issue with Michael Moore is that he saw fit to include a preachy "drugs are bad, mmmkay, just say no" routine in Dude, Where's My Country, and that grates on my particular sensibilities.

I am willing to forgive him this, however, being as he's openly questioning Bush's 911 connections and asking the questions that need to be asked - and NO ONE else with any sort of high visibility is doing this. There's some remarkably fishy things about 911 and they're not just along the lines of "somebody goofed up" - it's looking more and more to me as if lots of somebodys may have goofed up a lot of things, and goofed them up on purpose, Reichstag-fire style.

If Moore's rhetoric is extreme, it's because it's called for in response to the other side's own extremities.

(BTW, if there's an ongoing DU discussion about 911 "questions" I'd like to be directed to it)

-Monde

stupid mistake in supporting Nader, at least he realizes that he did and is trying to make amends for it. Since when is being rich a 'crime' (ie something to be disliked for) especially when you make your money honestly and not like the dirtbag repukes. What we need is MORE wealthy people on our side that are willing to put their money where their mouth is. As far as the 'fat' insult goes, that is irrelevant.

I will agree that sometimes his rhetoric is extreme, but anyone who is bothered by it is unlikely to support our side anyway.

12. Small comment re: Nader support
When he realized, prior to the elections, that it was going to be too close for comfort, he suggested that Nader made a list of issues that he would like to see Gore push through, if elected. If the Gore camp would accept that list, Nader would refrain from running in all the states that were very close - and thus only run in the states that Gore was sure to win.

It's been described in his 'Stupid White Men' book. I was surprised to see that the Nader camp didn't follow up on that suggestion - otherwise, a whole lot things would be different these days.

15. Dear oh dear
Just do a little check back through history and think of the consequences if there had never been people willing to expose corruption and fight in the corner of the ordinary working person.

The fact that after acquiring fame and fortune Michael Moore still devotes himself to such just causes is admirable. To compare the one person who shows the international community that there are Americans who give a damn about their country to Rush Limbaugh is disgraceful.

Moore deals in facts, Rpublicans deal in lies and deception. There is no comparison. And as for the fat thing, I thought Democrats were supposed to be politically correct. If image is that important to you maybe you would like him to land at the film premier on July 4th in an A6 fighter, wearing a flight suit, nice and thin thanks to the Atkins diet, declaring major operations to block distribution over. Powerful image that!

Michael Moore is a national hero. Stay tubby Michael, it works for Homer Simpson and you just wouldn't be the same.

6. Way ta Go Moore!! A 4th of July with a BANG !!
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 03:21 AM by abracadabra
The exposing of the Bush Crime Family is the best fireworks show Americans could ever watch!

the Fourth of July ! YEAH !!
...can only guess the impact this is going to have on the election.

Winning the Award at the Cann Film Festival and receiving the longest standing ovation ever in history of the film festival(20 minutes)
was Moore's only ticket to get Fahrenheit 911 film released in this country.

The Bush Crime Family would have banned it, but the film is so "in the news" that they really can't suppress it without looking like absolute totalitarian fascists(which they are).

I PREDICT there WILL be a TERRA EVENT before the release of Fahrenheit 911

--it will be a desperate attempt to throw the country into turmoil and to prevent the majority of people from realizing that the Bush's and the Bin Ladens are best buddies from way way back.

Michael Moore DEFINES the word PATRIOT !!
Anyone who will stand up and put his life on the line for the purpose of preventing our loss of freedom (at the hands of our current corrupt regime) is and Honorable man.

Any day he could have an "accident" since he is messing with billionaire crime bosses like the Neo Cons.

21. Moore is great
I'm not sure how much you guys have read on the subject of Fahrenheit 911, but it's the first Documentary to win the Palm D'Or (Sp?) award at Cannes since back in the 50's, 54 I believe, when Jacques Coustou won it. Not only that, the movie recieved a 25 minute standing ovation afterwards which is unheard of. A lot of that was appealing to a widely liberal audience of course, but most of them are film fans first and foremost and if this movie had been a poorly made diatribe for leftists, I garauntee it wouldn't have gotten the ovation it did.
Michael Moore is a rich fat man that can be loud at times, but the work he produces is certainly quality. Bowling for Columbine was absolutely fantastic so I have little fears this movie shouldn't be as good. Moore is on a mission to get this movie in as many theatres as possible during the summer and get the DVD released just before the election hits. I don't care if he's fat and rich, at least he's working from the heart and not for the greenbacks!
My main worry is that many theatres, particularly in the south, will choose not to play it. And it will ultimately be another Bowling for Columbine arthouse film with no legs to reach the vast majority. Unless of course, Moore can find more controversy before the film releases.

24. Wilkommen, dude.
I'm sure I will have to drive at least 50 miles to see F911. I live in backasswards Oneida County, NY, (between Utica and Rome) where many decent flicks never get shown. For example, I had to go 45 miles out of my way - to SYRACUSE - to see O Brother, Where Art Thou? even AFTER it got nominated for Best Picture. New Woody Allen flick? Forget about it. Most people here are the most ignorant philistines I have ever seen north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Of course, Cat In The Hat gets three screens out of eight.

As a matter of fact, I bet they won't even play it in Syracuse. I bet I have to go to Albany to see this one.

We need people like him to rile up the administration and to nudge us to not become complacent.

From the time he was a high school senior elected to his local school board, he has crusaded to keep people informed about important, and often controversial, issues we all must pay attention to.
