Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 06:58 AM by NNN0LHI
The Iraqis had no say so one way or another in this deal. The US has appointed every one of these thugs. And you better believe the one Bush wanted to get the job did get the job. Amazing.

Don

3. So they won, then they lost?
Seems like the Bushco's got their appointment! They did win!

If Pachachi hadn't turned it down, Bushco would have been successful in selecting Iraq's new President! Some fucking sovereignty!

I'm grateful that Pachachi turned down the job and the Iraqi's got someone they feel they can support. However I am OUTRAGED that Buchco was that close to hand picking the new President!

5. New Iraqi President Calls for 'Full Sovereignty'... NOW
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 06:00 AM by maddezmom
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s new president said in his first public remarks after being appointed on Tuesday that he wanted the United Nations (news - web sites) Security Council to grant the country "full sovereignty" in a resolution now under discussion.

"We the Iraqis look forward to being granted full sovereignty through a Security Council resolution to enable us to rebuild a free, independent, democratic and federal unified homeland," Yawar told a news conference.

Hoshiyar Zebari, newly reappointed as foreign minister on Tuesday by Prime Minister-designate Iyad Allawi, was heading for New York to lobby the United Nations for full sovereignty when the U.S. occupation authority relinquishes power on June 30.

It was not clear if Zebari would ask for amendments to the draft resolution on Iraqi sovereignty proposed by the United States and Britain. Yawar last week, as head of the Iraqi Governing Council, criticized the draft for giving too little control to Iraqis over U.S. troops remaining on their soil.

17. That's why the whole idea of stabilizing the Iraqi government ...
is such a joke. They won't last two weeks after American troops leave. If someone told me I was going to be the new Iraqi president I would be on the first plane out of Baghdad. Talk about the kiss of death.

14. interesting quotes by al-Yawer
~snip~
In an interview published Tuesday in the Saudi daily Al-Riyadh, al-Yawer belittled Pachachi, saying the octogenarian former foreign minister had been caught napping at meetings of the Iraqi Governing Council and had no "popular base inside Iraq."

Al-Yawer was quoted as saying U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who announced al-Yawer's appointment Tuesday, had told him Pachachi should get the presidency in recognition of his age and stature.

"How can honoring someone in his last days come at the expense of Iraq's future, which needs to be rejuvenated?" al-Yawer was quoted as telling Al-Riyadh.

Al-Yawer was quoted as saying Paul Bremer, head of the U.S.-led occupation authority, offered him "several posts," including ambassador to Washington, if he would pass up the presidency.

"I told him, `Search for whoever wants to go to Washington, I am the son of this country and am clinging to it, and it is the Iraqi people who want to nominate me — if you believe in democracy and respond to the people's will.'"

16. According to the BBC this AM, the presidency is largely "ceremonial"
So, Allawi, ex-CIA, possible cousin of Chalabi, keeper of the 45 min. to WMD claim........is the real guy in charge.

A mess.

19. Will Iraqis buy in to this ?
I doubt it. Rumor has it that the Occupation Troops won't leave until 2006. I suspect that there will be US troops there for the next 50 years or more unless the Iraqis have an Uprising and demand that those 14 Military bases close and the troops leave.
