Long ceremony fells a dozen band members (GHW Bush spoke)
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 06:11 AM by MaineDem
A dozen middle school band students fainted Monday during a Memorial Day observance in Kennebunkport's Dock Square.

Police said they believe a combination of fatigue and dehydration caused the students to pass out.

None of the students was seriously injured, but one was sent to a hospital for observation, Police Sgt. Steven Shisler said.

...

Former President George Bush spoke, as did soldiers who recently returned from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Willey said.

It was Poppy...he made the kids pass out. (Just kidding of course but his appearance at the event just begged for some sort of comment.)

6. This is outrageous!!
I am seriously disturbed by this article (maybe I'm just seriously disturbed). A dozen students passed out! A dozen! What's worse is they knew they were putting these kids at risk.

"It was hot and lengthy, and I can't disregard that," Willey said. "It's hard on us, too, but this is the only way we can help repay them for their service." It's hard on us, too?? How many of us passed out? How many of us were in the same circumstances? Did the kids have access to water? Did you have access to water? My heart bleeds...

...snip

"We had a couple go down, and I think a lot of them were a result of seeing the first ones go down," Shisler said. Yeah, right. It was really only one or two that we harmed. The rest were just copycats and passed out to do the in thing.

High school band director Bruce Lewia said he thought at first that the students were sitting down. what makes me think he was about ready to go kick some butt there for a minute. Community members rushed to get them water and find room for them to sit.

Lewia said some of his band members have fainted in the past during the observances. So this seems to be an on-going issue. So what actions did you take to prevent this one..(oops that's the next paragraph..)? Were you not informed that this event was twice the length as the previous? I bet you made no effort to take a more healthy approach....after all it's hare on you, too.

"It turns out they hadn't had much for breakfast. This year I read them the riot act and told them to eat breakfast first and drink water first," he said. Yes. Here is is. You did address the issue in advance. You read them the riot act. How nice. Next time you better read them the riot act a couple of times. And did we punish those twelve thoughtless children. How dare they faint. You were suffering, too.

The lecture seemed to have worked, as the band made it through subsequent appearances in Cape Porpoise and Kennebunk. The lecture worked?? Well just because there weren't any immediate issues.... Heat exhaustion actually hits a little later and may not be diagnosed correctly. Go ahead just keep reading them the riot act. Survival of the fittest! Rah Rah

I hated high school! These people are committing child abuse and don't even care.

7. One wonders why so many passed out at once...Perhaps the
BFEE appearance may have had something to do with it.
To my
knowledge and from friends, Kennebunkport has never
been impressed with this particular family. Maine
is a different breed of cat, when it comes to
bushes and other low growing shrubs. Sorry for
the kids, hope their getting well.
