TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran is "happy" with neighbouring Iraq (news - web sites)'s new interim government, the Islamic republic's top national security official said, hailing what he saw as a "step towards a return to sovereignty".

"This government may not fulfill all of our expectations, but it is a step forward. We are happy that this government has begun its work," said Hassan Rowhani, a cleric who heads the Islamic republic's Supreme National Security Council.

"We hope that this government organises free elections that lead to the formation of a national government and national sovereignty," he added.

Rowhani did not elaborate, or say whether Iran would afford the new government its recognition.

1. Well
If I was appointed by the reining authority and stood to make millions from graft, I would be happy too.

2. We should rejoice
Things are moving along quite nicely, although slowly and keeping in mind this should have been done months ago.

Worry not about the new government of Iraq. It will evolve into a system which excludes the US from it's affairs. The * boys will be booted from Iraq and the people will settle their differences as time goes by.

The * boys have dug a deep hole for themselves and soon enough they will be buried. Think not? Can you think of anything they have not failed at? They will prove to have failed once again as the new Iraqi government gives them the boot.

3. What will come of those 14 US military bases on Iraqi soil?
Bush has no intention of leaving Iraq.
If he gets back in, look for a broader crusade on
innocent nations, starting with Syria and Iran.

6. In a way, they should be
Many of their friends on both sides of the war will be in powerful positions, for example their allies in the collaborator parties PUK, al-Daawa, and SAIRI will be holding key positions; on the other side, TharAllah, Hizb al-Fudala, and Sadr's Jaysh al-Mahdi control most of the south in resistance to the occupation.
