Spitzer sues GlaxoSmithKline over 'Paxil fraud'
Found on Raw Story, http://www.rawstory.com

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said on Wednesday he filed suit against British pharmaceuticals company GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK.L: Quote, Profile, Research) , claiming fraud over its antidepressant drug Paxil.

The lawsuit alleges that starting in 1998, GlaxoSmithKline engaged in a concerted effort to withhold negative information concerning Paxil and misrepresented data concerning its safety and efficacy in children and adolescents.

3. But isn't he a little sue-happy?
Seems like he's always got his finger on the trigger.

5. He doesn't have an army and a blank check from congress,
so has to resort to using the rule of law, instead.

7. He's the NY Attorney General!
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 12:15 PM by djg21
What would you have him do? He was elected to represent the State's interests in litigation, and to advocate on behalf of the State and its citizens. That is the governmental function of an AG, and that's his job!

4. Sounds good to me!
Too many prosecutors and AGs spent their time covering up for big corporate instead of doing their job. Too bad there aren't more like Spitzer. He should be Attorney General of the United States.

8. NY Attorney General
The office has been used, for as long as I can remember, as a strong voice for consumer/citizen advocacy.

I don't recall them ever going after such big fries as they have in the last 3 years though. Bless 'em.

6. Poison Paxil
As one of the many (thousands? millions?) who was fed this poison to counteract some normal effects of menopause, I am now about 40 pounds overweight and having an extremely difficult time getting rid of it. I finally got disgusted and flushed the remainder of the last prescription down my toilet. Of course I suffered some more than a little unpleasant withdrawal side effects and do not advise this as a way to get off this drug. This was in the mid '90's so doesn't fit in the time frame described, however, I think that the time frame should go back to when it was originally released for general use and include adults since we were also adversely affected. If anyone has an e-mail address for Mr. Spitzer, I would appreciate having it. Thank you very much.

9. It made me DEATHLY ill with FLULIKE symptoms for the two weeks
it took to flush from my system...

This stuff was horrible-- maybe worse than the depression.

10. PAXIL withdrawal
While Paxil definitely was the right med to treat my depression, the sexual side effects, along with the horrific withdrawal, made me swear to never take the stuff again if I have further problems with depression in the future.

12. I've been trying to withdraw from Paxil for over a year.
It's pure hell. It's like little electrical charges going off in my head. My doctor told me I just might have to stay on it indefinitely.

13. I weaned myself off for good
over a year ago. Go slowly and you'll be alright. I have to admit, Paxil helped me at first (after a death in the family)but then I just felt nothing-like a blob. One time I missed taking it for three days and experienced horrible withdrawal symptoms. I knew then that something was very wrong with staying on this stuff for any extended time. I started weaning myself off after that. I take an herbal remedy now, SAM-e and have found it to be very helpful with none of the side effects. In addition, it's also good for the liver and joints. You might want to check it out once you get off the Paxil. :)
