Iraq will have no veto on U.S.-led military force -Powell
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L03664604.htm

DUBAI, June 3 (Reuters) - Iraq's new interim government will have no veto over future military operations by American-led forces after the U.S.-British occupation formally ends on June 30, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said.

The U.N. Security Council, divided over how much authority Baghdad will have over U.S.-led troops, focuses on the issue on Thursday, when Iraq's foreign minister addresses the 15-nation body in an effort to shape a new U.N. resolution.

Powell said the interim government would be fully sovereign and able to reach agreements with Washington on how Iraqi and U.S.-led forces would operate after the handover.

"There could be a situation where we have to act and there may be a disagreement, and we have to act to protect ourselves or to accomplish a mission," Powell told Dubai-based Middle East Broadcasting Centre in an interview aired late on Wednesday.

4. Ireland is supposed to be too
However when Bush Jr. visits here later this month there will be 700 of Bushes cronies running around armed with permission to shoot to kill if they perceive a threat to him.

This is in a nation where the Police are not (except for special response units) armed and carrying a gun is a serious offence. A few years ago Police shot a man carrying a shotgun who lost the plot and they got into SERIOUS trouble. An enquiry was even launched as a result.

Bushco has been allowed to desecrate our neutrality and now break our stringent gun laws. Every other nation is merely fodder to Dubyas and the neocons ends. It's a disgrace.

Just last week Our Dear Leader was saying the Iraqis would have the final say on any military action...

Must've just been a ploy to get support from Labour MPs

10. This is a dead-ender.
Surely to gawd the Bush cabal doesn't believe it will persuade anyone on this faux sovereignty offer.

11. I doubt the Security Council will agree to this
They know who's got the leverage right now, and who does not. And they've been pretty clear about Iraqi sovereignty needing to be absolute -- which would obviously include control of military units inside their borders.
