Outrage over comments made by Fresno Unified trustee Manuel Nunez at Hoover High School's graduation poured into district offices Wednesday, with many people criticizing his remarks about the war in Iraq and some calling for his resignation.
The furor cost Nunez an appearance at Roosevelt High School's commencement Wednesday. Board President Patricia Barr, who called her colleague's comments "totally inappropriate," told him she would take his place at the Roosevelt graduation because of the controversy.
... His remarks about the war in Iraq sparked the most heated reaction. He wished success to the graduates planning to attend trade schools, colleges or universities and to those entering the work force.
And then he spoke to those who have volunteered for military service:
"I wish you a safe and successful tour of duty as you search for the so-called weapons of mass destruction and the liberation of Iraq and other countries that President Bush, Vice President (Dick) Cheney and Defense Secretary Rumsfeld decide to point to next as our enemies."more
