WASHINGTON - Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told 11-year-old journalists in a televised interview Friday that his boss is awesome.

Asked what the most important part of his job is, Armitage replied readily: "I do anything Secretary of State Powell asks me to do."

He then went on to say he was responsible for developing foreign policy, running the State Department building and overseeing its budget, and being "chief operating officer of the organization of my boss."

Asked how he got the nickname "Powell's bulldog," Armitage said: "I can't imagine. How unfair. I thought it would be `Powell's poodle,' which has some alliteration."
