French Jewish teen is 2nd stabbed in a week
ASSOCIATED PRESS

June 6, 2004

PARIS – A Jewish teenager was stabbed in the chest by a man crying "God is great" in Arabic, officials said. It was the second attack in a week on a young Jewish man.

The 17-year-old victim, who was not identified, was attacked Friday afternoon as he left a Jewish school in Epinay-sur-Seine, north of Paris in the rough Seine-Saint-Denis district, said local officials on condition of anonymity.

(snip)

The victim's injuries were not life-threatening...

Last Sunday, the 17-year-old son of a rabbi was attacked by a group of young men as he was about to enter his home in suburban Paris. The group of young hit the son of rabbi Victor Bellahcem, while yelling anti-Semitic insults.

(snip)

Anti-Semitic attacks have been on the rise in France despite a series of measures put in place to counter them. The Interior Ministry has reported 67 anti-Semitic acts in the first quarter of 2004, a 60-percent increase from the same period a year earlier.

1. I can't figure out why there is not a much higher incidence of violence
With the situation coming to a full boil in Palestine,
I would have expected a much greater increase in Muslim on Jew violence outside of Palestine. Especially in light of the dire poverty and desperate living conditions faced by many Muslims in the
EU and elsewhere. I am more than a bit perplexed by the paucity of attacks.
I think the fact that such attacks are so infrequent belies
the claim that rampant anti-Semitism is sweeping the area.

2. How about the lack of Christian-on-Muslim attacks here in the USA?
Does that puzzle you as well?

Incidents of anti-Muslim bias
jump by 70 percent, group asserts

By Robert Marus

ABP Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON (ABP)--Incidents of anti-Muslim bias in 2003 jumped 70 percent over the previous year, a study by an Islamic civil rights group says.

In its 9th annual civil rights report, the Council on American-Islamic Relations--which calls itself the nation's "largest Islamic civil liberties group"--said Muslims in the United States reported 1,019 incidents of discrimination or violence in 2003.

That figure is up from 602 incidents reported to the group in 2002, although the group acknowledged the 2003 total may reflect a higher rate of reporting.

4. What?
An innocent person is targeted and stabbed for no reason other than they are Jewish and all you can do is wonder why there is not more of that kind of terrorism against someone because of their faith?

There is no excuse for this kind of terrorism and even if "palestine" was a real place it sure as hell is not in France.

8. A stable state will never be founded upon terrorism
Targeting and killing innocent women and children because of their faith will never be accepted by humane people. There is a better way and it will be found by those that reject terrorism.

9. Is the US stable?

And seeing as how I wasn't arguing about the merits of a Palestinian state, but rather about whether a place known as Palestine exists (which it certainly does) I don't see how your post has any relevance.

19. Tell this to Ariel Sharon, Likud and the right wing settler coaltion:
"A stable state will never be founded upon terrorism."

You have really stumbled on to something there.

Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 09:33 PM by rfkrocks
If there is no Palestine-how come the Palestinians call themselves Palestinians?-a whole people made up the name?-anyway this is clearly a hate crime and should be treated like the way one would be in the US but oh wait in the US we don't have hate crime legislation-:eyes:

14. Who is making excuses?
First of all this murder is not terrorism by the usual definition of the word, where it involves mass-violence.

Secondly the fact that the frequency of these kinds of incidents is low, is relevant. No matter how tragic even one such an incident is, it does make quite a difference wether it happens often or rarely.

From where i am sitting it seems that "they" dont hate "us" half as much as certain individuals in power apparently would have us believe.

This has nothing to do with making excuses for such incidents.

I see where extremist views on both ends of the political spectrum are so opposite that they seem similar.

11. sad
Fanatics on all sides. I believe the only way for a human being to love another without looking at his religion or race would be if we were somehow attacked by aliens.

There is no hope in this world. And we're just sitting here doing nothing. Tomorrow it could happen to one of us.

12. In the first case, it wasn't an Anti-semitic attack.
The fool attacked three other persons without racist or religious reasons.

13. Actually it probably WAS an antisemitic attack.
"The 17-year-old victim, who was not identified, was attacked Friday afternoon as he left a Jewish school"

Do the math.

17. BonjourUSA has the advantage of more comprehensive French reports
The only reports I can find in English talk about the Jewish victim, but there are other attacks around the same time that are thought related:

http://news.tf1.fr/news/france/0,,3061529,00.html

Roughly (it'll do me good to attempt a French translation, anyway):

The prosecutor said that, after having injured Israel, the attacker threatened, without hurting them, 2 other Jewish youths who were sitting in a car not far from the school, brandishing a screwdriver. Later in the evening and the next morning, 2 sets of double attacks happened in the same area. At 10pm, 2 people were threatened with a knife. One, of Haitian origin, was wounded in the "omoplate" and will need 10 days off work. The other, of Algerian nationality, was cut on the face. A second pair of attacks happened at 5am Saturday morning, 400m from the talmudic school. A man of Portuguese origin had his shirt slashed and a man of Guinean origin was wounded and will need 2 days off work.

At the Bobigny prefecture, they said that "the profiles of the 4 victims are very different from that of the Jewish youth. One was a newspaper seller, another was attacked putting out his rubbish in Epinay. None of them was Jewish." For the 2 incidents which followed that of Israel, the attacker said to his victims "'Why are you threatening the Arabs?'", the prosecutor continued.

So it looks like a Muslim Arab, but he is not specifically aiming at just Jews (if it is the same person in all cases).
