2. Makes Mrs. V. happy too; she's also a fed. employee
I work for a DC law firm that shuts down when the gov't shuts down (weather, etc.). I'll find out tomorrow if that includes this time, too.

I sure as hell hope so. We've already decided to leave work at 3:00 PM on Wednesday -- the procession will make rush-hour traffic bloody impossible.

Just re-read the exec. order I linked to; it doesn't look like it. I think only the federal govt. will be closed.

13. I think so.
Banks are closed on federal holidays.

They were closed when Nixon died. I was an IRS employee at the time, and I got the day off. The only thing Nixon ever did for me.

34. Confederate Memorial Day
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 03:46 AM by saigon68

When is Confederate Memorial Day ?
It varies according to the State. While the State of Missouri does not have an official day for this event, the Sterling Price Camp celebrates it usually on a Sunday, around April 26th. The following States have official holidays set aside to honor Confederate soldiers (Confederate Memorial Day or Confederate Heroes Day):

Alabama April 29th
Florida April 26th
Georgia April 26th
Mississippi April 29th
North Carolina May 10th
South Carolina May 10th
Texas January 19th
Virginia May 27th

On Edit: I make no statement whatsoever with this post except to say---Its another world out there. The folks who put these flags out there would NEVER agree with anything I stand for--

48. Don't be so sure.
I had a confederate flag in my dorm room at one time, even as I was preparing to vote for Dukakis. I just didn't realize, at the time, how offensive it was to alot of people. And placing it on the graves of confederate soldiers is one of the rare instances where I can almost think it is still appropriate.

Most of those soldiers did not believe they were laying down their lives to defend slavery - even if that was exactly what the reality was. Most were poor, uneducated men who fought because their leaders told them that their "freedom" was at stake.

46. WEIRD!
The only way the state legislature would make Martin Luther King's birthday a state holiday was to also make Confederate Memorial Day a holiday.

I've lived in SC all my life and I still don't understand these people.

Well, maybe I do understand. They are racist. Most will not admit it, but a short conversation with most reveals their racist mentality.

In Mississippi, Martin Luther King Day just happens to be the same day as Robert E. Lee Day. Guess which one is listed by statute as the state holiday?

7. what is the estimated cost to the tax payer for this national wake?
as a man and as a fiscal conservative, ronald reagan stood tall for cutting excess waste and he would be appalled that any president would shut down the government just to honor his memory and lead to the wasting taxpayer dollars.

You could not pay me enough to come into the city next Friday. As it is, I'll have to come in to work on Thursday. I imagine my commute time will at least double. That means I anticipate six hours coming and going to work on the day Reagan lies in state at the Capitol.

when Nixon was buried, too. I think it's kind of a tradition--though there haven't been that many Presidents who have died in the last 20 years. If it makes you feel any better, we don't get the day after Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve off (though we usually get to leave early).

Edit: Or Good Friday.

28. If 6 Was 9 ~*~Jimi Hendrix
IF 6 WAS 9

(yeah, sing a song bro’...)
If the sun refused to shine
I don’t mind, I don’t mind
(yeah)
If the mountains ah, fell in the sea
Let it be, it ain’t me.
(well, all right)

Got my own world to live through and uh, ha !
And I ain’t gonna copy you.

Yeah (sing the song brother...)
Now if uh, six uh, huh, turned out to be nine
Oh I don’t mind, I don’t mind uh ( well all right... )
If all the hippies cut off all their hair
Oh I don’t care, oh I don’t care.
Dig.

’cause I’ve got my own world to live through and uh, huh
And I ain’t gonna copy you.

White collar conservative flashin’ down the street
Pointin’ their plastic finger at me, ha !
They’re hopin’ soon my kind will drop and die but uh
I’m gonna wave my freak flag high, high !
Oww !

Wave on, wave on...

Ah, ha, ha
Fall mountains, just don’t fall on me
Go ahead on mister business man, you can’t dress like me
Yeah !

Don’t nobody know what I’m talkin’ about
I’ve got my own life to live
I’m the one that’s gonna die when it’s time for me to die
So let me live my life the way I want to
Yeah, sing on brother, play on drummer.

50. Middle east timeline
I never got a timeline where we could match what Islamic terrorist were REALLY interested in for their own historic reasons. Our cultural dates are no big thrill to them.

June 11th is the anniversary of the ceasefire end of the Six Day War that Israel won in humiliating the Arabs. You can bet both sides will remember that one. 911 was a commemoration of Bush's victory speech at the end of Gulf War I, if I am not mistaken.

This means one target might be Israel by that logic.

<snip> Leaders of the G8 group of the world's major industrialized nations are meeting in the U.S. state of Georgia this week, which would allow them to travel to Washington for the funeral on Friday.

A SECURITY CHALLENGE

The first presidential funeral in Washington since Lyndon Johnson's in 1973 will pose a major security challenge for a city already on high alert against terror threats following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.//

Maybe I am getting to be a bit shell shocked from all the news the past 3 years surpassing my worst nightmares of a bush* II pResidency, but this has my stomach knotting up a bunch. Too many leaders in one place.

53. well, i gotta call em as I see em.
Remember, chicago is the center of corruption, without ties - no, because of the incest between both parties here. Dems ain't really here, and reps, well many are looking at prison.

Our fed US attys are concentrating on public corruption - those guys are really busy.
as for the rest, being in a union does not put one down for sainthood. I use union labor on my house, even though much cheaper alternatives are readily available. (unlike our new make believe gover-not) I support union where-ever I can. But, face it the INS office in Chicago is criminal. The lines each morning are ungawdly. And they refuse to even put benches or seating there for the elderly.

Some parts work well. many others don't. If we can't clean up our act, the rest of the voters will clean it up for us. with four more years of shrub. god forbid. (Oh no, I hear voices in my head - I am destined to be president - Trust me!)

Think of them as floating holidays." So says a friend who is a fellow federal employee. I think "potential holidays" sounds a little better, myself.

I guess my day off will just another thing I am grateful to Reagan for. Along with a massive deficit, the Savings and Loan disaster which was caused by deregulation, etc., etc.

Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 08:54 AM by CO Liberal
I work what's called a "9/80" schedule, where I work nine days in every pay period - nine hours a day Monday thru Thursday, eight hours one Friday, and the other Friday off. In short, I get a three-day weekend every other week.

So I'll be off on Friday anyway....
