US to pullout 12,500 troops from S.Korea despite security fears

SEOUL (AFP) - The United States plans to withdraw 12,500 troops from South Korea (news - web sites) by the end of next year, slashing by one third its forces aligned against North Korea (news - web sites), a senior South Korean official announced.

US officials maintain that the troop cut will not result in a weakening of its ability to deter the Stalinist member of President George W. Bush (news - web sites)'s "axis of evil."

"The United states informed us of its plan to pull out 12,500 troops by the end of December 2005. That figure includes 3,600 to be sent to Iraq (news - web sites)," said Kim Sook, the head of the foreign ministry's North American affairs bureau.

Kim said Monday that South Korea had a counter-proposal to present to the United States, which would be delivered after consultations between related government agencies.

4. They continue to work in opposition againt policies
they promote... "NO we can't seek a diplomatic solution with the Nuclear crisis (?) in North Korea... we must make them bend to our will ... we will not compromise"

but their screwed up policies in Iraq require something altogether different.

Iraq is a quagmire - not just for the US military - but also for the whole Bush Administration.
