Bush, Kerry to Pull Ads in Reagan Salute
Bush, Kerry to Pull Ads in Reagan Salute

1 hour, 3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) and Democratic rival John Kerry (news - web sites) will pull their campaign ads Friday, the day of former President Reagan's funeral.

The two campaigns are trying to avoid overt politicking during a time of national mourning. The Kerry campaign said Sunday that the candidate would take a week off the campaign trail. The Bush campaign announced Monday that Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s trip to Springfield, Mo., for a rally had been canceled in honor of Reagan.

The Bush campaign also plans to stop airing a hard-hitting television commercial this week that assails Kerry on the Patriot Act. The spot had been widely criticized for taking liberties with Kerry's position on the legislation that expanded the government's surveillance and detention powers following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Instead of that ad, Bush will run a commercial that trumpets recent job growth under his administration and that jabs Kerry, calling him a pessimist on the economic turnaround.

What nonsense:

"The two campaigns are trying to avoid overt politicking during a time of national mourning."

How does that square with:

"Instead of that ad, Bush will run a commercial that trumpets recent job growth under his administration and that jabs Kerry, calling him a pessimist on the economic turnaround. "

I can see how they are avoiding overt politicking. Uh?

3. Let's see 1.2 million jobs created...

...following 1.2 million jobs lost since Bush took office.

Net new job growth = 0

Rove's pulled Dubya's commericals for a retool. I heard somewhere the negative act ads on Kerry are having a negative effect on Bush's poll numbers.

4. The media's deification of Ronald Reagan sure does not help Kerry.
Why play into their hands by pulling campaign ads? Do they say something bad about a man who hasn't been in politics in over a decade?

5. Actually he was the first one to decide on that, and I think it was
smart. It would be a waste of money.
Now Bush copied him. But the news says: "Bush and Kerry" not "Kerry and Bush"...figures..

6. I don't know
the deification of Reagan seems more confined to the media than the populace at large. Many people liked Reagan, but they're not acting like the world's coming to an end.

8. This is one big ad for Bush. But one can not do a thing about it.
I think it shows Kerry's class. As always if it sounds good Bush will grab a hold.

14. It helps Bush* even less ~ The more they show of Reagan the smaller
and dumber Bush* looks in comparison.

7. Didn't somebody "suspend" politicking in Minnesota a couple of years ago?
The funeral is a commercial for "unifying, not dividing."

Bad play by the Democrats. There were ways to run ads "honoring" Reagan while pointing out that Dubya is "not Reagan."

9. Even Princess Diana was buried in fewer days than Saint Ronald.
This is disgusting. It most resembles the wallowing of the "Cult of Personality" after the death of Eva Peron where the Peronistas had her lying "in state" for 12 days.

12. This "lying" in state is preposterous
They say they are modeling it after Lincoln and JFK.

There is a big difference between RWR and the above two. RWR wasn't assassinated creating a deep deep deep sense of loss.

10. Is this going to be the Citibank State Funeral?
or the Land Rover State Funeral?

or the --insert your sponsor of choice-- Funeral?

Y'know, like the Visa Triple Crown?

Are they honestly planning commercial breaks in a State funeral?

13. The "hard hitting" ad assailing Kerry on the Patriot Act just ran on CNBC.
This leads me to conclude that Bush is lying. Again.

FIRE THE LIAR

16. I read the article as saying that that particular ad would no longer run
and that it would be replaced by an economic ad. I might be wrong.
