Democratic long-shot aims at Isakson, Collins (Georgia)

ROCKMART, Ga. - Republican Senate candidates Mac Collins and Johnny Isakson came under fire from a little-known Democratic rival in a forum here Tuesday for accepting campaign contributions from defense contractors after voting for the war in Iraq.

Jim Finkelstein, a long-shot Albany attorney whose son served in the Marines in Iraq, called on both congressmen to return their contributions or exit the race.

It is "unconscionable," he said, for any elected official to accept contributions which could appear to be a conflict of interest.

Both congressmen were present during a forum here which featured speeches by candidates of both parties.

Collins, who spoke before Finkelstein, had no opportunity to respond. Isakson, who spoke afterward, did not refer to it.
