Congo Rebel Leader Says Fighting Resumed
Bukavu - Renegade troops battled with government forces on the outskirts of this strategic Congolese city on Tuesday, despite U.N. efforts to end a crisis that threatens to derail the country's peace process.

U.N. officials, who did not want to be identified, confirmed the fighting and blamed government forces for launching the attack.

The United Nations had wanted Mutebutsi to leave the city and government troops to end their advance so the two sides could negotiate an end to the crisis.

There are some 10,800 U.N. troops in Congo. About 1,000 of those U.N. troops are in Bukavu, but they have not intervened militarily to stop the fighting.
