(Billy) Graham Center roof burns
Torches used to fix the roof of Wheaton College's landmark Billy Graham Center may have sparked a blaze that endangered lives and priceless artifacts on Tuesday.

By 6:30 p.m., two hours after workers from Showalter Roofing of Naperville had wrapped up for the day at the center's Barrows Auditorium, smoke was churning out of the roof in a dense, black cloud that was visible from at least 4 miles away.

The hundreds of people inside the center when the blaze started were able to get out safely, though one firefighter was injured slightly.

snip...........

Some people were too afraid to exit the building and remained inside until firefighters escorted them out, fire officials said.

Joylin Lane was among the fearful in the center's main wing to have doubts about the right thing to do.

"One of the women said, 'Why don't we stay back and pray?' " Lane said. "The rest of us were like, 'I think we need to get out.' "

more.................

3. Karma blowback. Graham interfered with the running of this country
for decades. He's the one who got * hooked on Jesus to the point where he thinks he's God's chosen messenger.

"He who troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind." - Proverbs
11:29.

Keep church and state separate.

5. Duh what?
Staying in a burning building and praying?

These guys are nuts.

Maybe God finally had enough of Billy Graham and his mail-order divinity degree.

7. Construction Accident...Too Bad
I was rather hoping that the building had been struck by lightning. That would have been appropriate.

8. I'm glad no one was hurt.
I knew someone who went to Wheaton. It's one of those schools in which students sign an agreement not to go to R rated movies. To each his own, I guess.

10. fires are frightening and horrible. if you've ever been through one, you
would never make fun of one. the name of this structure has nothing to do with the fear involved in trying to escape the fire inside...

don't be sick.

i hope nobody was hurt.

to address the naivete of your post, but don't mean this as a personal attack.

One night on patrol, many years ago, i observed dense smoke from an apartment building @ about 2:30 a.m. i notified dispatch, then went in. i kicked in 7 doors before the f.d. arrived. there were people(and pets) in 6 of those apartments. they didn't awaken until i'd forcefully entered their apartments (knocked loudly 1st).

i was taken to the e.r. for smoke inhalation. no vanity behind this story, i was just doing my job. i post it to qualify your "if you've been through one" statement. i have.

years earlier, i was responsible for some horrendous fires, at the behest of people like those @ the billy graham center. if i'm wrong & there is a god, i hope he can forgive me. i can't forgive myself.

these same whackjob fundies that couldn't decide to pray or run, will be in chapel this sunday praying for bush to rain fire down on brown people, just because they delude themselves into believing in a different name for a fictitious deity. these same fundies will not share your compassion for the terror & pain felt by these brown people they hate so vehemently.

fuck them. i wish they'd all had the courage of their faith & prayed for yahweh to protect them. i'm sure none of them will appreciate the wake-up call, & demand bush stop the napalm strikes burning as we speak.

no personal disrespect intended to you, tif, but i'm saving what compassion hasn't been scorched out of my soul for their intended victims, not for evil religious nuts too self-absorbed NOT to care for the crimes they've urged this generation of soldiers to commit.

13. The Church I Attended as a Child Burned A Few Years Ago
The Church of the Assumption in Morristown, NJ. They were installing air conditioning in the church, which was built in the 1870s. A worker pulled one of the lighting fixtures out of the ceiling to use as a work light while working in the space above - the heat from the fixture ignited the 110-year-old timbers, and the resulting fire burned off the entire roof.

As a result, my daughter made her First Communion in the school gym, which served as the church while the roof was rebuilt.

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire,
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire,
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire,
We don't need no water let the motherf*cker burn,
Burn motherf*cker burn.
