Net paedophiles may lose credit cards
Snip from: Rebecca Mowling, Evening Standard Crime Reporter
9 June 2004

Paedophiles buying child pornography on the internet face having their credit cards withdrawn under radical new plans to crack down on child abuse.

Officers from the national crime squad and the FBI are spearheading an international child protection force which will put pressure on credit card companies to ban internet paedophiles from holding cards in a bid to stop them paying to download images from websites.

Other plans include: targeting the assets of organised crime gangs who run the websites, and monitoring conversations in internet chatrooms to stop paedophiles from grooming their victims over the web.

1. It amazes me...

...that pedophiles actually use their credit cards to purchase child pornography. What am I missing? Is there some reason they think this won't eventually catch up to them. A guy at the university where I work got busted last year for this. Is the urge so strong that they are willing to take this chance?

8. It seems like the perfect tool to track them down, so why ban it?

3. Sorry, but this shouldn't fly
Look, I abhor pedophiles as much as the next person, but this is the type of precedent setting action that we could all come to regret later.

Besides, most smart criminals get credit cards under an assumed identity, not their own.

4. Exactly. Just because some folks are scum doesn't mean that all of us
should lose the last vestiges of our privacy.

And between scaring us with terrorists and grossing us out with pedophiles, that's what's happening here.

5. Let's not get wound around the axle over this...

I do NOT trust the government.... ANY government... when it comes to "cracking down on sex offenders"!

Years ago (1989 or so) I attended a series of talks given by the US Post Office, the Justice Department and FBI on their efforts to eradicate so-called "child pornography". I still have my notes and the handouts they gave me (somewhere in this morass of stuff).

The most chilling thing I remember from those seminars was this: the postmaster of San francisco BRAGGING that most (if not all, at the time) "kidporn" was *actually* produced BY the government from old sources, in order to create a "decoy catalog" that the government could then SEND to people on the government's "sex offenders" lists.

The idea behind the sting was that the Post Office would notify the person that an illegal catalog was at the Post Office addressed to the person. They were then asked "Would you like to come down to the Post Office and sign a certificate stating that you do not want the catalog and will surrender it for destroying?"

"When the guy comes down to sign the certificate of rejection... THEN we HAVE him! He is arrested for possession of illegal materials! His signature on that line ACKNOWLEDGES that illegal material was sent to him!"

When I objected "Uh... isn't this called entrapment? Isn't this illegal?!" the Postmaster scoffed "Look, we ONLY have people targetted who are ALREADY ON our database of sex offenders! Innocent people don't have a thing to worry about!"

The damned audience BOOED me for even asking the question!

What they failed to "get" was this: The rolls of registered sex offenders INCLUDES names of people who have been arrested for such things as necking in the backseat of a car, urinating in public, fondling a willing partner (boyfriend/girlgriend stuff) in a public place (like a beach) and public nudity (Gay Pride parades etc). Only a small FRACTION of these folks are actually on the rolls for rape, pedophilia or violent sexual offenses!!

And once a child molestation or kidporn jacket is attached, if the guy goes to prison, he is fucking TOAST!!!

Given the current hysteria over sexual offenses, and given the FACT that entrapment is alive and well in this land, do YOU trust the government to "go after" anyone on sexual offenses?

I don't! The scenario is all too possible: Guy goes to a party, gets drunk, decides to walk home. Beer makes its needs known and the guy stops behind a bush to whizz. He's arrested by a passing cop and is booked for public indecency! His name goes on the rolls. A few months later, he gets a notice about the catalog someone sent to him... and he's nailed on child porno possession!

By the way, the new technique NOW in use is to load kidporn ONTO a mark's hard drive and then accuse him of possessing it! IT'S BEEN DONE! Haven't you all noticed the recent "rash" of people having child porn ON THEIR COMPUTERS?

You can DAMN bet it wasn't there before the guy was investigated!

By the way..... go check your own hard drive! Do a search for "lolita" or for all your .jpg and .gif files. You will find gifs and jpegs there that you NEVER knew you had! And if someone wants to get you badly enough, they WILL.

There are services and programs you can buy to scrub your hard drive, but then, evidence that the drive has been scrubbed is evidence of guilt to these bastards, also!

The problem is when a known one is set loose over and over, even when he is on the net. How to stop these???

He is a good "Christian". Told to leave kids alone at one church, goes to another. Known since 1965, aware since 1976. Sickening, the pain being caused.

7. Type of tactic used under the Comstock law
The postmaster would ask for a pamphlet from a publisher and then had the guy arrested and thrown in prison.

10. Big Brother on guard duty
By Bernhard Warner

London - Police plan to patrol Internet chatrooms as part of a multinational crackdown on paedophile rings.

They will also seize the finances of website operators who peddle child pornography and freeze the credit cards of their customers.

"We want to create the equivalent of a beat cop for the Internet," said the UK's National Crime Squad Assistant Chief Constable Jim Gamble.

Police from Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia are to form a global taskforce with the primary aim of stopping paedophiles luring children into offline encounters.
