The US occupation of Iraq (news - web sites) will leave a negative legacy at the June 30 handover of power, due to a series of compounded strategic mistakes, a former adviser to the Coalition Provisional Authority wrote.

"Because of a long catalog of strategic and tactical blunders, the United States has failed to come anywhere near meeting the postwar expectations of Iraqis," Larry Diamond, who worked as a senior adviser to the authority, wrote in the Los Angeles Times.

"It now seems clear that the occupation will leave a mixed, and on balance negative, record when the Americans hand over power," he said.
