Sara Lee to Cut 4,175 Apparel Jobs, Close Five Plants

June 10 (Bloomberg) -- Sara Lee Corp., the largest U.S. underwear maker, said it will cut about 4,175 jobs from its branded apparel unit and close five plants.

The company is consolidating intimate, sportswear and underwear production in Puerto Rico, Honduras, Mexico and the U.S., Sara Lee said in a press release e-mailed to Bloomberg News. About 350 jobs will be eliminated in North Carolina, while the other cuts will affect workers outside the U.S.

The company, whose brands include Hanes, Champion and Wonderbra, cited changing production requirements and apparel trade restrictions set to expire at the end of the year.
